Therapy can be a wonderful way to become more self aware, build new skills to address unexpected challenges, heal and move forward. My career in social work is rooted in person centered, solution-focused treatment that highlights the strengths and resiliency of the folks I serve. I encourage clients to interrogate which systems of oppression have molded their sense of self and worldview. I have experience working with individuals struggling with eating disorders, anxiety, trauma, and those wishing to fine tune interpersonal- familial skills.

We are experienced, interactive, feminist therapists who believe that the therapy relationship must be compassionate, trustworthy, and genuine. We work with people experiencing depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and conflicts in relationships. We also have developed expertise on the treatment of substance abuse, the widespread effects of violence against women (incest, rape, battering, and harassment), eating disorders, addictions, parenting issues, and problems in the workplace. In our initial meetings with clients, we work to develop realistic goals and a time frame for therapy. Throughout the therapeutic process, we help clients identify strengths as well as problem areas.

My work is with adolescents, couples and adults coping with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, OCD and ADD. It is not an easy process to find a therapist that offers the specific type of therapy you or your child needs. The "goodness of fit" between you and your therapist is essential for a successful therapy experience.

My experience includes treating adolescents and adults who struggle with depression and anxiety, including OCD and eating disorders.
I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW REFERRALS AT THIS TIME. If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of unproductive thought patterns that affect your everyday functioning in emotional and/or behavioral ways then therapy can introduce you to more effective ways to live your life. Finding a therapist who is supportive, present, understanding, and skilled in guiding you towards a more satisfying and fulfilling life is a positive step in that direction. It's a journey that's well worth taking in partnership with a professional you trust. Email is the preferred initial way to contact me.

The ideal client is open to receiving advice and implementing it into their daily lives. The client may have issues with substance abuse due to a lack of healthy coping skills. The client's needs are to improve the quality of work-life balance. It is also important for clients to learn healthy coping strategies to cope with anxiety, depression, and other underlying mental health disorders that are often the underlying cause of substance abuse.

For me, there is no one "ideal client" because therapy is about addressing diverse challenges and finding unique solutions. My ideal client's issues might include anxiety, depression, self-esteem struggles, relationship difficulties, substance use, life transitions, and a broad range of emotional disorders clients' needs may include but are not limited to problem identification, developing coping strategies, psychoeducation, and awareness of one's thoughts and emotions. My client's goals would center on continuing or returning to normal function with safety as the priority, given that "normal" can and will look different per client.

Often we feel that happiness is just out of reach. We need to perfect something, someone, or ourselves to become happy. In a safe and confidential therapeutic setting, you can examine the problems which challenge you. Core beliefs about yourself and your relationships can change. As an experienced psychologist I help clients to act mindfully rather than react to life with self-blame, anger, or sadness. Learning how to find calm within yourself can take the place of the constant quest for external perfection.

In my 40 plus years as a psychotherapist, I've heard many times: "I want to be happy, to feel peaceful inside myself, but I can't seem to get there" or "I feel badly telling my friends and family. I worry they get tired of listening to me." There are many reasons people feel stuck in their anxiety, depression, or relationship problems, and feel immobilized by them. Understanding what is causing problems can help you feel less stuck and immobilized, more at peace, and more self-confident.

In my practice I utilize a collaborative, strengths-based model to help clients increase awareness and develop strategies to feel more successful in their lives. My therapeutic approach is overall eclectic, drawing on my training in the evidence-based modalities of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). As an LMHC with a Master's Degree in Art Therapy, I also incorporate expressive therapy when beneficial. In all of my work, I aim to focus my approach depending on the needs of the client I am working with.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
