Chronic Pain Therapists in Raynham, MA
Feeling overwhelmed? Things don't make sense and you've lost perspective? Sometimes it is a big reason - such as divorce, medical issues, chronic pain, weight management, financial stress or job loss. Or sometimes we just realize that we are not where we want to be in our life and not sure how we got there or how to get back. This can result in anxiety, depressed mood and sadness. It's time to start putting the pieces together - changing bad behaviors and replacing them with healthy ones, being accountable and responsible for our own lives.

Shopping around for a qualified psychotherapist takes time. It can be challenging to find someone with whom you feel comfortable opening up. After years in the field, I am sensitive to the effort it takes each of us to reach out for help when life is difficult. That can be even harder when you are stressed and unsure how to proceed. Working exclusively with adults (18+), my client-centered, insight-oriented, relational approach can support you during crisis and life transitions. Together we will help you develop resilience, cultivate post-traumatic growth, and live each day more fully.

Please Note: I presently am not accepting new patients. If you are managing a recent loss, coping with anxiety, depression or physical illness, it can be helpful to talk to a therapist. I enjoy working with people from adolescent to elder, and with couples of any age. Sometimes anxiety can keep us from accomplishing what we want to in life, or insomnia makes it difficult to engage with the world as fully as we would like to. I have worked with many of these kinds of issues, as well as those experiencing life-changing health problems including diabetes, pain and cancer.

As a social worker, I focus not only on what diagnoses someone may have, but also them as a whole person, inclusive of their environment. Sometimes it's easy to blame everything on yourself and it takes an outside perspective to help you to consider and work through what other factors may be contributing to your struggles. I enjoy working through issues surrounding folks with ADHD, ASD, mood disorders, chronic illness/disabilities, trauma, and people who are LGBTQIA+ or involved in fandom. I try to customize therapy as much as possible to the individual since there's no one size fits all approach that works for everyone.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
