Hi there, I am so glad you are here! I look forward to the possibility of working with you or your child. I am here to support each and every one of my clients in being the best version of themselves that is possible. An area of focus in my practice is children and adolescents impacted by trauma and neuro-developmental diversity. In addition, I work with many parents/caregivers of young children who, due to their children's circumstances and other life stressors, are struggling themselves. I look forward to connecting and working together.

I have been working as a licensed clinician in a variety of settings for over 25 years. My philosophy is to help individuals to identify their strengths, their learning and thought patterns, and help them to achieve personal goals. I believe that all people have the right to feel happy and to be successful in this world, and recognize that there are many obstacles that may interfere. I am very interested in the role of movement and nature in mental health, and offer walk/run/outdoor therapy as well as telehealth. In addition, I am trained in CBT, DBT, mindfulness, IFS therapy and traditional psychotherapy.

Finding the right ‘person’ for yourself or a loved one can be beyond challenging. You want to know that that person will be truly engaged in what you have to say, won’t judge you by your thoughts or behaviors, and care enough about you to offer compassion and guidance through your toughest days. I’m familiar with this search, and I believe that I could be the person you need right now as you begin the work to your higher self. One of the first things I tell all of my clients is that they have to feel a connection with their therapist. You have to feel safe, supported and most importantly, respected.

Our broad goal––of course––is “the end of unnecessary suffering.” Sound about right? While we all strive for this, I specialize in helping folks with a very-unique kind of suffering: OCD. I can tell you that few people understand the pain and complexity of OCD—(even most therapists). I will listen intently to your unique story. Just know that I can introduce you to an arsenal of tools that can help: mindfulness, ERP (exposure and response prevention) and on and on. Yes, thoughts can be “sticky.” But––with hard work––if (or when) those thoughts come back around…they can be as quiet & as harmless as a yellow post-it.

Currently accepting new clients! I enjoy working with individuals with a sense of humor and a desire to understand themselves on a deeper level. My approach to therapy is grounded in a deep respect for each person’s unique journey and a commitment to fostering growth and resilience. I understand that taking those initial steps toward counseling can be a challenging endeavor. Therapy is unique to each person, but some themes I have noticed are people seeking out an understanding of their emotions, an improved ability to cope and function and feeling more empowered about their individual situations.

For me, psychotherapy must address the needs of the person. Sometimes this can mean exploring how you got to the point you are at, and how you want to change; and sometimes you may want specific tools to address a very specific issue. Finding the right therapist is perhaps one of the most important choices you will make and also one of the most difficult. Although a therapist may have an armory of techniques to use, what I have found to be at the heart of any type of psychotherapy is whether the relationship works between you and your therapist.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
