I utilize both psychodynamic (how the past influences the present) and interpersonal approaches (how relational patterns impact psychological well-being) to therapy.
While we may not always have control over all aspects of our lives, we have control over how we choose to react, how we make meaning of our situation, and most importantly how we grow from the challenges presented to us. I work with adults throughout the lifespan, from young adults to older adults, in an individual and group therapy setting. I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, trauma, identity development, life transitions, and navigating relationships. I love working with clients who recognize the need for change in their lives and are motivated to work towards bettering their relationship with themselves and others.

Though I draw from humanistic, psychodynamic and DBT modalities, in essence my approach is integrative, person-centered, and strength-based.
I see therapy as a place to practice courage and honesty, with the goal of creating more joy, humor, flexibility, and play in one's life, relationships, and work. I often see individuals dealing with complex issues such as depression, grief/loss, anxiety, recovery from trauma/abuse or neglect, postpartum or parenting issues, child emotional or behavioral concerns, relationship conflicts, or identity/life transitions. My approach is collaborative, empathic, and interactive, creating an environment in which to help you better understand, relate to, and address the challenges you are experiencing.

I have extensive training in multicultural mental health, and I have also completed two fellowships in psychodynamic psychotherapy at Harvard Medical School.
Choosing to go to therapy is both a courageous and meaningful step in someone's life. In my experience, some clients enter treatment having a sense of what is troubling them and have made great efforts to resolve these difficulties, and yet these painful feelings persist. And other times, clients are only aware of the hurt they are feeling and are looking for ways to identify it's source and alleviate their discomfort. I have found that the therapeutic relationship can be helpful in both circumstances and seek to provide an approach that is best characterized by warmth, flexibility, openness, active engagement, and sensitivity.

I am trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis and aim to foster a safe and confidential space for my clients to express themselves freely.
Going to therapy implies the courage to question ourselves and face the challenges that get in the way of self-acceptance. Our lives change and we often struggle to change with it. I believe therapy can be a transformative encounter that allows a different experience of ourselves. As a native Spanish-English speaker, I provide a culturally sensitive approach to therapy and am mindful of race, gender, sexuality, and class intersections. My background and my current role as a clinician at Harvard University Counseling and Mental Health Services have allowed me to work with patients from all over the world.

I integrate psychodynamic psychotherapy, somatic psychotherapy, mindfulness, and Internal Family Systems.
Psychological suffering exists on different levels and manifests in different ways, in psyche, body, interpersonally, socially, both consciously and unconsciously. Thankfully, there are many ways to address psychological struggle, ranging from the exploration of non-conscious intra-psychic and interpersonal dynamics underlying "symptoms" to the exploration of ways that we are alienated from community. This work is especially helpful when the source of our suffering is unclear. My work is social justice-informed and incorporates an understanding of how larger systems impact our lives. Facilitating empowerment is key in my work

Therapy is a unique space to explore and organize your internal emotional experiences, feel more satisfied in your interpersonal relationships, better manage and tolerate a broad range of emotions, and experience new ways of relating more meaningfully to yourself and others. Through carefully exploring your emotional and relational experiences, both past and present, you may develop a deeper sense of self-understanding, wholeness, and a renewed capacity for joy and purpose. I work from a primarily relational and psychodynamic orientation, though I am flexible in engaging with the specific needs of each client.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
