My extensive journey as a counselor has taught me that, wherever one finds oneself in life, lasting change is not only possible, but within reach. Embracing an integrative approach to psychotherapy, I draw upon a rich tapestry of modalities in order to tailor a treatment plan to each individual's unique circumstances. I encourage clients to build upon their own strengths and to tap into their innate desire to flourish. I create a therapeutic space free of judgment or prejudice. I believe that treatment is fundamentally an interactive process in which the client will develop and foster the skills to live fully and with meaning.

Dr. Packard is a Modern Psychoanalyst and Licensed Mental Health Clinician. He has demonstrated an unique ability to integrate various forms of therapy into one unified approach; a blend of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapy for problems of everyday life. Why use Integrative Psychotherapy? Most clinicians know that no one single theory or therapy works for all clients, all problems or situations. However, the vast majority of therapists strongly adhere to one particular approach which is fine if their approach matches the client they are seeing, the problem they are treating, where the client is in treatment, and so forth.

Life is tough at best, traumatic at worst. People let us down or we let ourselves down. We may repeat patterns that once seemed to work for us, but are now impeding our growth. Often we know what we "should" do to feel better, but can't seem to actualize our intentions. Or we become so overwhelmed with messages that we have to fix ourselves that over time our resolve weakens and we feel stuck, frustrated, and helpless. It can feel uncomfortable to ask for help when we're struggling, but we are not wired to walk this life alone; we all need a safe space where we can share our hurts, disappointments, and losses.

My ideal client is looking for a partner on their mental health journey. They are someone that is curious how to address behavioral challenges or emotional disorders in a sustainable way. They might be someone with substance use problems, family dynamic issues or simply trying to figure out their career aspirations. My ideal client will likely benefit from confidence enhancements as their goals are attained and coping techniques are gained. Most importantly, my ideal client will be honest with themselves to address the sources for symptoms of their mental health challenges powerfully and directly.

My years as a professor (Clark, Dartmouth, Harvard) assist my work with another group of patients--adolescents and young adults who face challenging life crises including academic problems, social anxiety, dating and relationships, and decisions about drug and alcohol use.
Many of my patients are recovering from addictions of various sorts. Many of them, as well as other patients, have mood disorders (anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder). I also work with individuals and families struggling with problems in work and career, marriage and similar relationships, and what are often described as existential or spiritual crises--the lack of a sense of meaning and purpose in life. I involve families in therapy when possible--people don't live and learn as isolated individuals.

I have been working as a psychotherapist for 16 years. I primarily saw individual clients in outpatient clinics until 2012, but I also developed an interest in working with couples since starting my private practice 13 years ago. Individual therapy still accounts for the majority of my client caseload, as I specialize in alleviating depression, anxiety, mood regulation, substance/ alcohol use, and communication difficulties. I primarily use the treatment modalities of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and narrative therapy, but establishing a therapeutic alliance is most important to start.

My therapy work is largely focused on people actively engaged in affecting the world around them; including those active in social change efforts; entrepreneurs; and researchers, teachers, and technical and supervisory professionals. I help those concerned about promoting social change to work on their personal issues in a climate supportive of their activism. I am also aware of the difficulties researchers and other professionals sometimes feel in psychotherapy that may feel alien. I bring this awareness to therapy, while helping those involved in administrative roles navigate the complexities of working with others who sometimes have very different personal styles.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
