As a psychodynamic therapist, I specialize in helping adults, adolescents and couples make sense of their inner worlds. My goal is to collaborate with clients to gain autonomy of their emotional lives, foster deep psychological awareness/flexibility and facilitate observable change in how they relate to themselves and others. Clients can expect a highly active, curious and reflective environment in session, where they are challenged and encouraged to develop insight as a primary mechanism of behavioral change.

My training is in psychodynamic psychotherapy and my style is relational.
I believe change happens in relationship and that everyone has the potential to heal. I have built my practice working primarily with young adults/adults who wish to engage in a longer term therapeutic alliance with the goal of gaining insight into relational patterns in order to achieve more satisfying relationships at home and work. My style is relational. When working with adolescents and young adults, I make an effort to include parents and caregivers in the treatment process by providing psycho-education, family sessions as needed, as well as appropriate referrals for family members.

My training is in psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, Somatic Experiencing and EMDR.
Social and political distress are causing fear and alienation, along with feelings of disempowerment and personal inadequacy with less community for us to count on. My way of working with this is to help clients become more aware of their own internal wisdom and connection to all things. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relational difficulties or just feeling overwhelmed. Listening to your story and using Somatic Experiencing, a mind/body approach, I work to help you find your sense of balance, curiosity, resilience, engagement, and vitality.

I am a psychotherapist who works from a relational psychodynamic perspective; I collaborate with clients to explore and narrate who, how, and why you are - aiming for a richer experience of your life. Broadly speaking, my approach is to help you foster a curiosity about and relationship with the various (and often disparate) aspects of your experience. My style is authentic, warm, and accepting, which helps provide a space where you can become comfortable to eventually venture into the deeply uncomfortable to enable growth and change.

While psychodynamic in nature, I utilize behavioral therapies (ACT and DBT) to help a person feel heard and continue to grow.
Life can be difficult--sometimes, unnecessarily hard. People do their best to cope with challenges, but often these coping strategies are destructive, hindering our emotional health and relationships. I specialize in depression, relationship issues, anxiety, and substance and behavioral addictions. Ideally, I can help you find your true self, and through this journey you can begin to discover new purpose, levels of contentment, and meaning in your relationships.

I am an institute trained psychotherapist, working integratively, within a contemporary, relational, psychodynamic orientation. After more than two decades of practicing in New York City, I am now located in Western Massachusetts, though I maintain NY licensure. For me, at the heart of a relational, psychodynamic, approach is my effort to strive to meet people where they are and make the work understandable and accessible based on who you are. I respect and build upon the ways in which I am invited to join and help expand psychic space, so that areas which are troubling can be demystified, transformed and feel less daunting.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic orientations including but not limited to psychodynamic, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR), mindfulness and somatic interventions.
As a therapist with a PhD in Counseling Psychology, I dive deeply into a wide range of concerns including but not limited to trauma, anxiety, sexual and relationship concerns, grief, body image and existential dreads. Though the topics people come to therapy with are diverse and unique, there is an underlying thread that ties them all together: we are all human, seeking to be understood and cared for. I create a compassionate, non-judgmental therapeutic space where people feel they can be their full messy, human selves. Together, we can explore your inner world and work towards finding peace and purpose in your journey.

Overall, the combination of a neuropsychoanalytic developmental perspective, a biopsychosocial assessment lens, and psychodynamic psychotherapy treatment integrates the way in which our minds, emotions, neurobiological processes and social relationships develop in complex and overlapping ways to create our experience of ourselves in the world.
Accepting new in-person patients - I consider the overlapping experiences of self, authenticity, identity, regulation, and relationships as central to therapy and the ways in which we make sense of ourselves and others in the world. I work with patients in an empathic, challenging, supportive and relational way toward life changes, as well as to discover coping skills tailored to their particular needs and experiences. I work from a relational, psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and attachment perspective of the whole person.

My approach is based on the needs of the individual and can include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques and play therapy.
Life is hard when there is too much unhappiness, worry, anger or frustration. I have been psychotherapist since 1994 and have a deep respect for the process of growth and change that individuals and families can accomplish. I treat children, adolescents and adults who are stuck in patterns that keep them from feeling happy, peaceful and healthy. If you are interested in listening to the way I think about therapy, here is a link to my podcast: www.theartoflistening.me/episodes/sarah-abel

While I draw on psychodynamic, bodycentered, mindfulness and relational perspectives, my treatment style conforms to you, not the other way around.
Life is hard and life can be beautiful. Your symptoms perfectly reflect your distress. Gentleness, curiosity and developing awareness create a foundation for healing. Life need not be situations and feelings that keep repeating. I work to create positive ways of relating to yourself and others. Real change is possible with respect, courage and an open heart. I am not a managed care therapist - my commitment is to lasting change. I work with heterosexual, non-binary and LGBTQA+ individuals and couples. I also specialize in working with end of life, grief and loss, autism and deaf and hard of hearing issues.

I incorporate the therapeutic modalities and frameworks of EMDR, somatics, psychodynamic theory, attachment repair, social justice, energy work, art therapy, parts work, and strengths-based practice.
My work is rooted in the belief that there is nothing wrong with us. We just need support in finding what works and what doesn’t work and integrating the myriad parts of ourselves. I work within a relational framework and value collaboration every step of the way. It is also my commitment to create a safe space where the complexity of identity and experience is honored and affirmed.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
