Good therapy helps us shift from feeling blocked by internal conflicts and fears to having a transformative relationship with ourselves and others. Mindfulness and IFS are two highly effective approaches to help access beneficial qualities of mind, even in difficult circumstances. I have successfully helped clients with a wide range of issues for 20 years, and have taught and supervised students in these techniques.

Do you suffer from anxiety? Depression? Do you want to feel better? Do you want to make changes in your life? As a result of my training and experience, I have been fortunate to see people change and grow while in therapy. I facilitate the collaborative process that enables individuals to learn how to handle life's challenges and overcome whatever made them initiate therapy. I watch people become more aware of who they are and how they operate in the world. With that knowledge and self-awareness, people can make different decisions.

I also work well with people suffering from anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and substance use issues, as well as relationship, career, and identity issues.
Therapy offers the opportunity to develop ways of responding more authentically and effectively to life’s challenges. I recognize that seeking therapy is in itself a sign of strength and courage, as it can seem easier to try to ignore difficult and repetitive thoughts, emotions, or experiences. I aim to create a warm and supportive space for self-exploration, helping to bring old, unconscious patterns to light and thus begin loosening the hold of self limiting beliefs. In spite of all we cannot control, in learning to relate to our experiences in new ways we can become more grounded and compassionate with ourselves and others.

I have years of experience working with anxiety/panic, depression, trauma, life changing illness, grief and loss.
Life is hard and life can be beautiful. Your symptoms perfectly reflect your distress. Gentleness, curiosity and developing awareness create a foundation for healing. Life need not be situations and feelings that keep repeating. I work to create positive ways of relating to yourself and others. Real change is possible with respect, courage and an open heart. I am not a managed care therapist - my commitment is to lasting change. I work with heterosexual, non-binary and LGBTQA+ individuals and couples. I also specialize in working with end of life, grief and loss, autism and deaf and hard of hearing issues.

We all have a story to tell and we are all driven to make meaning of our lives. Much of our suffering—those times of depression, anxiety, and discontent—arises when the weight of the past and the pressures of the present become overwhelming and we lose our sense of being the author of our own story. I have found that when we are allowed to speak in a compassionate space, to be heard, and to welcome our true selves—even the parts of ourselves that we struggle with—we uncover strengths we didn't know we had. We discover possibilities for change and new relationships, and freedom from old and limiting beliefs. We regain our storyline.

Mental health difficulties often arise in the context of an absence of close interpersonal relationships. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and severe, persistent mental illness can be successfully treated through improvements in one’s capacity to develop and maintain adaptive, healthy interpersonal connections and engagement in meaningful and enjoyable activities. I'm available for both teletherapy and in-office session. Lots of free parking.

I am a psychologist with over twenty-five years of experience who specializes in helping people who identify as highly sensitive or anxious. You may have received feedback from others that your feelings are “wrong” or “too much.” Such messages frequently result in experiencing harsh self-criticism and shame. I help my clients embrace the many gifts of being sensitive while also navigating a world that often feels harsh and invalidating. I work with adults of diverse ages and backgrounds, providing a warm, connecting, and honest space for you to access your essential strengths and overcome barriers to living a rich, meaningful life.

Struggling with anxiety about a stressful world and uncertain future? There’s a voice in your head that is desperate to do it all perfectly, to stay four steps ahead, not make any mistakes. You have a persistent feeling of "not good enough" that follows you from work to relationships to family. Your mind races with thoughts about what you could have done better or how you disappointed someone. You feel paralyzed, self-critical, and overwhelmed. Yes, it's partly due to the state of the world right now. But to be honest, you've felt this way a long time.

I help women of color and LGBTQ+ clients dealing with depression and anxiety who want to learn to prioritize themselves– without guilt. My clients are caring people, but only thinking about everyone else has left them tired. They're ready to slow down, treat themselves with kindness, and figure out what's important to them. Often, they also want to learn to be vulnerable so they can feel closer to people. When we begin our work together, they know there's something missing in their lives but they're overwhelmed and don't know how to start making changes.

My mission is to create a healing space for you to feel safe and understood. I specialize in helping people recover from trauma, eating and body image issues, addiction, anxiety, and depression. Together we make sense of seemingly illogical or out of proportion reactions and responses. I believe even the most challenging parts of our personalities are creative adaptations developed to help us survive, and that true healing involves honoring these parts of ourselves, while working to find beneficial pathways in the present.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
