I understand how paralyzing anxiety can feel.
Welcome! I'm Stephanie, LICSW with over 10 years of experience working in the mental health field. Are you noticing the impact anxiety is having in your life? My clients understand talk therapy is not sufficient. They understand therapy is a tool that will not work unless you are willing to be radically honest and open to change. Together, we will explore how anxiety presents itself in your life, we will identify unhealthy patterns of thinking, and we will work together to process life's events. We will integrate healthy and sustainable coping skills, and we will create a plan to take action.

I also offer parent workshops which provide a strong understanding of how anxiety/OCD works, specific strategies that unintentionally strengthen the anxiety/OCD, and powerful techniques parents can use to help their child who is struggling with anxiety/OCD.
My specialty is working with children, adolescents and adults struggling with OCD and anxiety. I previously worked at McLean’s residential OCD facility and Rogers' anxiety/OCD residential, partial and intensive programs. For anxiety and OCD, the gold-standard therapy is a powerful approach called exposure therapy (ERP). Through this systematic process people learn how to face their fears and no longer be controlled by them, which provides a liberating and confidence building experience. I also use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and compassion-focused therapy (CFT).

Thank you for visiting my profile. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, grief from loss, a recent life transition, relationship issues, family issues, or trauma from a catastrophic event, I can help you. My approach with individuals centers around helping you to review emotions, thoughts, life experiences and beliefs to gain insight into your present-day challenges. We can begin to evaluate the problematic patterns you may have developed over time and work together on ways to change those patterns. I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach and will often integrate different treatment methods into our work.

We all experience change in life and because change is fluid, it can be negative or positive. When change occurs, especially unexpectedly, it can impact one's overall well being. It is important to establish a positive mindset to make dealing with change possible. With therapy, individuals can make healthy adjustments to their mindset to help navigate life changes. I have witnessed such growth through my experiences working with individuals of all ages and genders, couples, and families as they navigate through issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, family/relationship conflicts, and more.

Depression and anxiety seem to be the new epidemic in this world.
My ideal client is an adult who is facing challenges associated with depression, anxiety, life changes, and life stages. My client seeks to find joy in life and expand tools to meet the day's challenges. Another ideal client would be the neuroatypical person seeking to understand how to navigate a world they struggle to understand. This could include those on the autism spectrum or ADHD. Another ideal client would be seniors seeking to navigate the challenges of aging, including loss of jobs through retirement, changing health, or any other issue.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
