As both an adoptee and a therapist (LICSW) specializing in adoption issues, I help adult adoptees navigate the unique challenges of our circumstances. Issues such as identity, trauma, attachment, relationships, and the lack of genetic mirroring, which can impact adoptees at various life stages. Significant events, such as the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, or a family reunion can be particularly difficult. My approach is compassionate and client- focused and together, we will work through these emotions to develop more effective coping strategies.

Things are really intense and scary in the world these days. And there’s a tremendous amount of grief, loss and anxiety that many of us are dealing with on all of levels. Because of that reality it might be hard to feel OK about the places in your life where you are doing well and feeling joy. Are you seeking personal growth or professional development to address barriers to desired outcomes? Interested in living a life of purpose and meaning through choice and action? Wanting to engage in deep emotional and spiritual healing?

This practice is based upon the reality that a mother’s wellbeing cannot be understood or supported without respect for her “mom work.” Mom work is invisible work. So - mom worry, mom anxiety, mom blues, mom guilt, and most especially, mom anger, becomes a negative judgment of a mother's "normalcy," rather than what it truly is: mom reality. Not a diagnosis, not “what’s wrong with me,” not an inability to do the work. Just mom reality, unsupported by respect for her work, and ultimately, unsustainable. Unless we push back to reclaim this ancient journey. You may wish to glance at my website to explore what I mean by this.

Life is difficult and people are often confused about how to manage the emotions and circumstances brought on by those difficulties. I work with families and individuals to resolve issues that prevent them from living a peaceful life. My approach is accepting, eclectic, practical, collaborative, active and mindful. If you are a parent struggling with how to manage your child's behaviors, a couple experiencing a fractured relationship, a teen or individual trying to come to terms with identity or a family dealing with adversity, I practice evidenced based skills that could improve your circumstances and your well being.

It takes a great deal of courage to reach out to another human being to ask for help. As a psychotherapist, I believe that the traumas we incur over our lifetimes and in relationships with our families, lovers, friends, co-workers, and employers can be healed in part through the therapeutic relationship. Life is our journey and it shapes, is shaped by, and is interpreted by us.

Life can be hard, and navigating it alone emotionally makes it even more heavy. I know therapy can feel vulnerable but with the right therapist it can be life changing and empowering. My name is Liz, I am a licensed independent clinical social worker, I worked for 8 years at Massachusetts General Hospital and several years ago began working in a private practice setting. I provide mental health support to clients by combining psychotherapy and animal assisted therapy (AAT) with Granite (Golden Retriever Service Dog) in my private practice.

Are you a new parent and feeling triggered as you reflect on your own childhood? Are you struggling to maintain a work life balance? These are some of the challenges many of my clients bring to me in an effort to make positive change in their lives. Being a part of your journey of personal growth would be an honor.

My areas of special interest include trauma-focused therapy and women's issues related to pregnancy, post-partum, and infertility.
My belief is that each client has within them the ability for positive change and healthy functioning. I consider it a privilege to hear clients' stories and strive to create a safe and collaborative environment in which we can explore strengths and challenges. I draw from psychodynamic and relational perspectives; the goal to better understand how past experiences and relationships affect current situations. l consider it essential to customize treatment to clients' needs and goals and incorporate techniques from other approaches, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), CBT, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

***Accepting new clients but no appointments after 3pm or on Saturdays available*** Life's level of crazy just keeps climbing. Even breathing seems difficult right now. Anxiety, worry, stress, fear. So many unknowns and so much uncertainty. Will you homeschool your children or do hybrid learning? Will you work from home, hire a sitter, or will you have to resign? Covid is taking a toll on your marriage, the house is getting smaller every day. Everyone seems to be adapting to this "new normal", except you. I'm here to remind you that fear is contagious, but so is HOPE.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
