I am accepting new clients! Life's journey can be full of crisis, loss, grief and trauma. These experiences activate fear in the primal brain, alter patterns of behavior, limit ones perception, lead to relationship issues, low self-esteem and addictions. If these problems are left unresolved, they can lead to physical and mental health problems as well as a weakened spirit, affecting ones core vitality for life. My spiritual approach provides clients with a safe, nurturing and compassionate environment where trust is easily built within the therapeutic relationship so that healing can take place.

When you enter therapy there is a sense of possibility. Finding a good match with a therapist is essential. Work on relationship is at the heart of therapy: relationship to oneself, to the past, to others, and to ultimate concerns and values.

I am trained in EMDR, CBT, Mindfulness, & Expressive Arts Therapy.
I specialize in helping men, women, artists, business and trades people, as well as adult children of alcoholics restore diminished or lost connections to their poietic capacity. The word poiesis is from ancient Greek, meaning to make, or to bring forth. In my work, I refer to it as meaning one’s creative capacity to respond to and shape one’s life - as well as one’s capacity to create things i.e. art, woodwork, poetry, a relationship, a mindfulness practice, a career, a garden, etc. When we are overwhelmed, our mental health can suffer, sometimes making it difficult for us to respond to life's challenges in a way that works for us.

I listen with with empathy and reflect back my authentic response. I work best with people who are open to expanding their blind areas and their potential for growth in a supportive manner. Learning about the 'plumbing' of the nervous system can be helpful or finding a metaphor for change or discussing the latest science in psychology. I feel comfortable and confident with a wide range of issues and concerns. Over the years I have developed strong Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques for adults and complimentary expressive arts therapy techniques for youth.

I offer knowledgeable and affirming relationship and identity support to queer, trans, kinky, and polyamorous clients. I'm a nonbinary lesbian who is passionate about serving LGBTQIA+ clients. I come from a sex-positive, trauma-informed, and pleasure-focused perspective. In working with clients, I consider the whole person, their mind, their body, their spirit. These three aspects aren’t separate but are in dynamic conversation: chronic physical symptoms are connected to our mental and emotional states, our feelings of depression relate to how we treat and relate to our bodies and sensorial lives. I enjoy supporting people facing life’s challenges, who are looking for a somatic dimension to their healing. I specialize in helping clients navigate difficult relationships, cope with grief and chronic illness, process the pandemic, and manifest greater depth, vibrancy, and purpose in their lives.

Think you might be stuck with a narcissist? Maybe at first you thought this person was charming or misunderstood, but over time you noticed the relationship took a toll on your mental health. Your attempts to help or encourage this person haven’t worked either, and the idea of setting boundaries feels ineffective at best. Many people question whether narcissistic trauma is a real problem. It is. You might have wondered if the problem is you. It is not! Individual therapy can help you learn to identify narcissistic behavior, understand its impacts, and choose how you navigate these types of relationships.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
