Whether you are coping with a transition, having challenges in a relationship, experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, grieving the loss of a loved one, or facing another obstacle to your well-being, the work we do together in therapy can restore you to a place of peace and balance. My role as a therapist is to serve as your ally: to be present with you in your expression of feelings; to serve as a witness to your experience, a companion in discovery and release of what no longer serves you, and a mirror, reflecting the wisdom that lies within you.

We often get stuck in maladaptive beliefs and patterns of behavior that once helped us cope with shame, fear or anxiety. They get in our way of feeling balance and a sense of well-being in our lives. The more we can develop insight into the source of these issues and break them down into manageable pieces, the more rewarding our relationships, work and free time will become. We all have the capacity to make positive changes that improve the quality of our lives. It is a sign of strength and resilience to reach out for help.

As a therapist who was born blind, I recognize that coping with discrimination negatively impacts our mental health, and that naming and challenging these outside forces in therapy can lead to self-empowerment and healing. I focus on addressing diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression with particular focus on teens, young adults, and first responders.

Using a blend of Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy, my client-centered approach helps clients reframe their situation and determine next steps to achieve life as they would like it to look and feel.
Many of my clients are navigating the emotional distress caused by life-altering events such as job loss, career change, loss of a loved one, parenting issues, or addiction recovery. No matter the situation, all are looking for support as they reimagine and rebuild their lives. This is when individual counseling can help.

Certified in Trauma Focus/ ARC Framework and Narrative worldview.
Whether working with a family, individual, and/or couples, I believe in a relational process in which finding a therapist that is a "good fit" as the groundwork for a supportive, transformative process. I believe that every individual has the ability to examine their life's journey and own their story; all while strengthening self compassion and working to navigate who and how to be in relationships. This along with growing to know, understand and accept oneself. Stepping into the therapeutic process is the first movement towards self discovery and growth.

This innovative approach integrates visualization and relaxation, art therapy, and externalized dialogue to create a narrative which allows clients to process traumatic events without re-traumatization.
If asked to share the most valuable lesson learned from my 20 years of social work practice my answer would be that the person seeking treatment is far more than a list of symptoms. I continue to draw inspiration from the courage and resiliency of my clients and stand firm in the conviction that with treatment and support we all possess the capacity for healing and emotional health. I am a Certified Trauma Therapist through the ITR Training Institute in Morgantown, WV where I received advanced training in the Instinctual Trauma Response (ITR) model developed by renowned clinicians, Drs. Louis Tinnin and Linda Gantt.

Life can feel overwhelming at times. It’s especially hard when your child is the one that’s struggling. It’s painful for you to listen to them talk about how anxious, misunderstood, or alone they feel. Maybe they’re not talking to you at all, which makes you worry even more... There could be something else behind that heaviness in your chest. You may be facing stressful relationship dynamics, a health issue, a loss of some kind. You get through your days, trying to cross everything off the list, but aren’t finding much fulfillment or joy. You’re feeling unsettled, anxious or depressed.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
