Men tend to be less inclined to seek out therapy because it implies that they are weak and struggling.
I am currently seeing people in my office and virtually over zoom. I specialize in parenting issues, anger management and spiritual issues. I provide support to men and fathers as they strive to become the best version of themselves. I tend to work with a lot of men who are former athletes. My background as a former high school and college athlete seems to serve our connection. The men who come see me want help in figuring out ways to channel their aggression in a healthier way and tend to be self reliant and often have a hard time asking for help.

I have practiced clinical psychology for 35 years. I love the process of helping people explore, understand and work through the deepest problems, conflicts and struggles of their lives and relationships. We all struggle: it is the hu man condition! Every person's life experiences are unique and deeply personal, as are the meanings attached to those experiences. For me the complexities and subtleties of each person's narrative are endlessly varied and fascinating, worthy of the deepest attention and respect. Not many are as privileged in their work as I am! For more information, you can visit my website.

Openings Available! I help adults and adolescents gain control over their anxiety and OCD and improve their quality of life. Are you feeling anxious or nervous? Do you find yourself feeling stuck, dissatisfied, or unhappy because you can't stop over-thinking or worrying? Would your relationships, career, or academics greatly improve if you could manage your anxiety? Does your anxiety ever cause you to feel like the walls are closing in, like your heart is beating out of your chest, or like you can’t catch your breath? If so, you’re not alone. Anxiety can be overwhelming but it doesn’t have to limit your life.

Many clients with ADHD appreciate this.
I specialize in working with clients who have ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD. I collaborate in developing goals of treatment and help clients identify, understand and address both current struggles and the childhood roots of these struggles. This approach is especially helpful to clients who had difficult, invalidating or traumatic childhoods. I help clients: to be compassionate with themselves, to honor yet process difficult emotions, and to change behaviors. I work best with clients: who want self understanding, who appreciate a thoughtful, safe space, and, who are willing to do the work to make these changes happen.

For over thirty years, I have been helping couples develop stronger and more intimate relationships. If it feels like walls have developed that are keeping you from being able to talk to your partner or to fully enjoy your relationship, then couples therapy can help. Together, we will come to understand what is getting in the way of connection and develop strategies and solutions for changing how you and your partner communicate. Conflicts in a relationship are natural yet they can create distance if not handled skillfully. Therapy will help you to learn ways of managing conflict that create closeness.

For over 25 years I have helped adults, couples, teens and children find ways to manage anxiety, depression and trauma in order to achieve an increased capacity for enjoyment in relationships and life. I strive to create a safe environment, where taking risks to connect with emotions leads to increased insight and motivation to change. I take an active approach to help clients achieve their goals and resolve their problems. When treating children, I work closely with parents, providing careful guidance about how to help their child develop and thrive.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
