I utilize interventions such as ACT, CBT and Exposure Therapy, Mindfulness and Trauma Informed.
Life is difficult and people are often confused about how to manage the emotions and circumstances brought on by those difficulties. I work with families and individuals to resolve issues that prevent them from living a peaceful life. My approach is accepting, eclectic, practical, collaborative, active and mindful. If you are a parent struggling with how to manage your child's behaviors, a couple experiencing a fractured relationship, a teen or individual trying to come to terms with identity or a family dealing with adversity, I practice evidenced based skills that could improve your circumstances and your well being.

I have been a social worker for over 23 years. During that time I have had the opportunity to work with many individuals and families experiencing a variety of issues including trauma, addiction, grief and loss, relationship issues and stress. When left unresolved, these issues often cause other problems that prevent us from living our best lives. In therapy, we will collaborate as a team to work towards achieving your goals. I use a client-centered approach and think that developing the client-therapist relationship is essential to helping you address and alleviate the concerns you are having.

I draw strongly from CBT, ACT, and mindfulness, but I tailor treatment to each individual client's needs.
I started a private practice with my colleague Molly to help clients dig deeper into their current lives and their past experiences, and to do the longer work with them on self-exploration and life fulfillment. I enjoy working with clients who are ready to work on themselves, willing to face their challenges and take control back in their lives. I emphasize a caring, empathetic, and strengths-based approach in my work, which allows me to support clients of all backgrounds and with their individual needs, strengths, and goals.

Using a integrative style, I work with my clients in order to help them explore the social, emotional, biological, nutritional, and intellectual factors that are impeding them. I take a Humanistic approach with elements of Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support the patient preference.
Where do you want to be in your life? What are the clear and practical steps to get there? How do you find the understanding, compassion and motivation to take those steps? These are the kinds of questions we will address while working together. As a clinical health psychologist and former Buddhist monk I use a collaborative approach focused on developing more personal well-being. I am a husband, father, brother and business owner who values individual perspectives, personal priorities and kindness. I am hard to offend and quick to trust with a healthy sense of humor.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
