I have had a private therapy practice in Andover and Westford, Ma. for nearly 30 years. During this time, I have worked with those struggling with a variety of concerns including relationships, parenting, identity, work and careers, depression, anxiety, trauma, school and education, gender, and cultures. Generally, the individuals, couples, and families with whom I work come to my office in some sort of pain or discomfort as they move back and forth between their real and ideal lives. The conversations we have shed light on what is happening and to try to help reduce feelings of pain and distress.

Through educating clients in the field of psychoneuroimmunology which focuses on the impact that stress has on the immune and nervous systems, clients have developed needed coping skills to deal with anxiety and depression that can exacerbate medical conditions such as bowel disorders, diabetes, other immune disorders, and chronic pain.
As life becomes more challenging and complex, people are readily impacted by stress, anxiety and depression. As a psychotherapist, allow me to help you with your mental health issues. My approach is client-centered, friendly, warm and empathetic. Our sessions will employ eclectic therapies which are evidenced-based such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which helps people to challenge negative persistent thoughts. Motivational Interviewing which aids in resolving conflict and in rising above life’s challenges is also utilized. Transactional Analysis which combines theories of personality and human interaction is used thereby optimizing the client’s natural given talents and potential.

The focus of my practice is anxiety, depression, family/couples conflicts, infertility, pregnancy/infant loss, child/adolescent therapy, attachment, grief/bereavement, and life transitions.
AWC does currently have a waitlist, we are working hard to add new clinicians to be able to provide the support that's needed. Life can take us down unexpected paths, and the change that must occur can be difficult, especially to do alone. We believe that every person is unique and experiences the world in their own way and that every person has internal motivation to reach their full potential. We are here to help you navigate your journey in a safe and nurturing environment.

I have been given the privilege to work with people on addressing and treating depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family conflict, sexual problems, trauma, body image and self-esteem, domestic abuse, substance abuse, and long-term illness.
Hi I'm Jill, a Mental Health Counselor licensed in Massachusetts with 19 years experience. Something I've heard over the years is how hard it is to pick a therapist from a very long list of skilled clinicians that typically sound similar. How can you really know? I can assure you- working with me will be a collaboration because I believe in building a solid rapport first with anyone I work with. Having worked in Boston and surrounding areas, shelters, and internationally online, I can adapt to meet people where they're at.

Whether you feel overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, depressed feelings, a troubled relationship, grief, or a past trauma that does not relent, there is a way forward for you and a hope for a more balanced future. One of the most important steps toward that future is the first one – the act of reaching out and asking for help. I encourage you to take that difficult step - for yourself, your future, and those you love. I can help you recognize and verbalize underlying problems, teach you skills to manage symptoms, and gain new insights that will shift your perspective.

I am a substance abuse and mental health counselor, who genuinely enjoys working with people. I believe almost all people who suffer with an addiction have an underlying mental health issue, trauma, depression, anxiety and low self esteem. I understand that addiction renders you powerless and in many cases extreme embarrassment. Mental health issues can be equally disabling and embarrassing. I can help you, no shame, embarrassment, just understanding and guidance as you move along your path of recovery. In some cases medication may be recommended and I work with three established Nurse Practitioners who accept referrals.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
