I specialize in perinatal and postpartum issues, trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, relationships, anxiety and mood disorders.
My approach to treatment is centered on creating a safe and collaborative environment for those who are seeking help. I believe in the concept that there is a continuum of health, and while at one level a behavior, thought or feeling can feel healthy, at another level this same thought, feeling or behavior can be experienced as problematic. Part of our work together may be determining what is feeling problematic to you, and how we can use your strengths to shift your experiences so that they are more in line with the life you would like to be living.

Have you had a great idea, a POP,  only to talk yourself out of it?  Started a project but abandoned it, telling yourself it was too overwhelming or just not doable?  Wanted to try something new or different and been discouraged by your own thoughts or the words of others?  We all have, haven’t we?  I certainly have.  So what is the driver behind our stopping, getting distracted, being “too busy” and talking ourselves out of actions and desires that will lead to greater fulfillment or happiness?   Fear!  Fear stops us from all things possible, from opening up and receiving the brilliance that this lifetime offers!

I have been a social worker for over 25 years. During that time I have had the opportunity to work with many individuals and families experiencing a variety of issues including trauma, addiction, grief and loss, relationship issues and stress. When left unresolved, these issues often cause other problems that prevent us from living our best lives. In therapy, we will collaborate as a team to work towards achieving your goals. I use a client-centered approach and think that developing the client-therapist relationship is essential to helping you address and alleviate the concerns you are having.

I have been professionally trained to work with the perinatal and postpartum population, and with people undergoing fertility treatments.
Are you struggling to keep it together after an infertility diagnosis or having a tough transition to parenthood? Infertility treatment is isolating - you probably don't know who to talk to, how much to share with your friends/family, and how to plan for the future when you don't know where your treatment will lead you. If you are a new or expecting parent, you are probably also really going through it - the sleep deprivation, the ever-changing needs of your baby, and the pressure to be "the perfect family." I will help you get through this and show up in your life the way you want

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
