The transition to motherhood is a vulnerable time in a woman's life. While it can be joyful it can also be stressful and life-changing. You are not alone and talking with a professional can be helpful during this challenging time. If you are pregnant and struggling with complications or pregnancy after loss, I am here for you. If you are a new mother who is overwhelmed and anxious, I have been there too and can support you on your journey. If you are a mom, of a toddler, who is angered easily we can work together to help you feel like yourself again. Reaching out is the first step.

Life does not come with an instruction manual. It can be messy, painful, overwhelming, difficult, and downright exhausting. But I believe that change is always possible. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationships, motivation, adapting to change, or just the stress of day to day living then therapy can help. Therapy is a collaborative process built on trust, therefore it is important to find a therapist that meets your specific needs. I provide a welcoming and safe environment to help clients define goals, identify strengths, and make positive changes.

Have you had a great idea, a POP,  only to talk yourself out of it?  Started a project but abandoned it, telling yourself it was too overwhelming or just not doable?  Wanted to try something new or different and been discouraged by your own thoughts or the words of others?  We all have, haven’t we?  I certainly have.  So what is the driver behind our stopping, getting distracted, being “too busy” and talking ourselves out of actions and desires that will lead to greater fulfillment or happiness?   Fear!  Fear stops us from all things possible, from opening up and receiving the brilliance that this lifetime offers!

I have been a social worker for over 23 years. During that time I have had the opportunity to work with many individuals and families experiencing a variety of issues including trauma, addiction, grief and loss, relationship issues and stress. When left unresolved, these issues often cause other problems that prevent us from living our best lives. In therapy, we will collaborate as a team to work towards achieving your goals. I use a client-centered approach and think that developing the client-therapist relationship is essential to helping you address and alleviate the concerns you are having.

Are you feeling completely drained - physically or emotionally? Maybe you can’t even remember the last time you felt well rested and stress-free. Living with stress, anxiety, fertility struggles, postpartum changes, cancer, or insomnia is hard enough but doing it while trying to manage all your other responsibilities can be draining. You may sometimes find yourself worrying about things you never used to even think about. The sadness you feel at times can make it hard to imagine reading a book, going out with friends, cooking a healthy meal, working out, sitting through another school play, or telling your partner about your day.

I provide therapy for people of all genders who are processing challenges related to identity, relationships, infertility, pregnancy, and parenting.
The desire for connection with others is hardwired into our brains. We want to be loved, to love, and to feel seen and heard by those we're connected to. Sometimes that doesn't happen and we're hurt, or we're scared to talk about how we feel because we fear being judged. Understanding who we are and how to best build healthy relationships is hard. It's even harder when roadblocks like infertility, unexpected pregnancies, or other issues related to family relationships are present.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
