I have many years of experience successfully working with vulnerable populations in outpatient, inpatient, and community-based settings. I have worked with diverse populations, individually and in-group settings. My work is grounded in the belief that change is achieved when the therapeutic relationship cultivates an individual’s awareness of self and facilitates there freedom from emotional pain through the application of the psycho-therapeutic process and compassionate listening. I work with teens and adult individuals who come from a variety of cultures, ethnicity, sexuality and gender expressions.

My specialties include but are not limited to opioid dependence, dual diagnosis, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Please email me at nsondhi@partners-in-therapy.net.

Our broad goal––of course––is “the end of unnecessary suffering.” Sound about right? While we all strive for this, I specialize in helping folks with a very-unique kind of suffering: OCD. I can tell you that few people understand the pain and complexity of OCD—(even most therapists). I will listen intently to your unique story. Just know that I can introduce you to an arsenal of tools that can help: mindfulness, ERP (exposure and response prevention) and on and on. Yes, thoughts can be “sticky.” But––with hard work––if (or when) those thoughts come back around…they can be as quiet & as harmless as a yellow post-it.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Do you ever feel stuck in your life and unsure of which direction to take? Do you have trouble setting goals and sticking to them? Are there relationships in your life in which you would like to create healthier boundaries? Are you ready to make a change and develop a deeper understanding of your emotions?

When your substance use has you against the ropes or flat on your back, it's important to have someone in your corner who truly understands your fight.

You may be feeling overwhelmed by stress and anxiety - whether it’s from external demands or internal struggles. Maybe it's social anxiety, "a life transition," or healing from trauma. Or maybe it's something more general, like you want to feel more "in control" of your emotions…and your life. I can help. Together, we’ll uncover the roots of your challenges, empowering you to move forward - with skill and confidence. I use “treatments that work” (CBT, DBT, mindfulness, etc). But we’ll find what works for YOU. Lastly, I don’t just want you to just “feel better.” I want you to live your best life. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

We often find ourselves acting, feeling and thinking in ways that seem automatic, and no longer under our control. These feelings and actions are familiar, but aren't satisfying and are not working for us anymore. Together we can create other ways to respond to your life that will be more fulfilling.

Drug Abuse Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
