I use Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, Brainspotting, and DBT/CBT.
Life is hard. Period. Do you find life is pulling you in different directions leaving you stressed and overwhelmed? Maybe this shows up as you finding it hard to say "no" to others? Or you thinking that you are “never good enough” Or feeling lonely and isolated from your family, friends, or culture, such that you feel like no one understands you, no one really “gets” you? Or sometimes you do not feel like getting out of bed or want to do anything. Therapy with me is a space for you to explore ALL that is blocking you from being the best version of yourself. A place for you to realign, renew, live your best life, & flourish.

Working with clients from ethnic minority groups is my passion; especially Brazilians, Latinos and Native Americans. Having experienced being an immigrant myself while living in Brazil, I am very aware of the unique difficulties facing newly arrived immigrants. Individuals needing assistance with school difficulties, parenting concerns, family conflict, marital discord, or functionally impairing mental health symptoms are my ideal client.

My ideal client seeks to understand themselves, including their strengths and the areas they wish to explore more deeply. They are looking for a companion on their journey to mental well-being, not an "expert" who imparts knowledge upon them. My ideal client values a collaborative approach, where we work together to navigate their challenges. They are compassionate and open to exploring their feelings and experiences, committed to personal growth, and motivated to develop effective coping strategies. They strive for peace, fulfillment, and stability, seeking therapy to enhance their quality of life and build resilience.

Do you hate being touched by your partner? Do you feel misunderstood and now you are worried that your partner is starting to resent you? Ever since that awful event, do you feel distant or disconnected because you can’t get disturbing images out of your head? These are common reactions to awful or overwhelming experiences. The good news is that they can improve with the right support. I help young and not-so-young adults learn the skills they need to turn down the volume on overwhelming emotions and reconnect with their loved ones.

My practice is devoted to creating a reflective space where individuals can make fuller contact with who they are and actively stretch beyond the limits of what they can do alone. Attention to one's inner life requires respect and courage, and fosters greater understanding, healing, growth, and the making of a more fulfilling life. The changes my patients seek to make include several dimensions. Improvements are often sought with respect to painfully familiar habits of thought, feeling, and action (or inaction). These are often longstanding burdens that one has carried for quite some time.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
