As an art therapist, I focus on using creative materials and connecting to the body to invite expression and emotional release.
Want to embody your most authentic self? I believe people find healing through community connection and creative expression. My practice focuses on empowering LGBTQIA+ teens and adults who are motivated to increase competence in being able to connect and sit with emotions, communicate with others and understand the multiple parts of who we are when living and engaging with the world around us. I work from a trauma-informed, strengths based approach, including elements of person-centered, CBT, and systems-based methods to explore mood related emotional stressors.

On top of evidence-based practices such as CBT, I often incorporate the expressive arts, such as art, music, or movement, in warm-ups, throughout the session, or when felt fitting by either me or the client.
Ellie Mental Health. Therapy is a process of gaining awareness through exploration. Gaining new awareness of our thoughts, behaviors, patterns, and relationships allow us to live more consciously and authentically. My nonjudgmental client-centered approach, and focus on the client-therapist relationship, will allow us to foster a safe space for new awareness together.

I provide either talk therapy or art therapy to clients, or a mix of the two if that's what you prefer! I the use a variety of approaches in my work, including psychodynamic theory, CBT, and relational theory, and have extensive experience in issues related to parenting and family dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and life transitions.
I am currently accepting new clients for both individual and couples therapy and have openings Monday evenings, Tuesday mornings and evenings, and Wednesdays. In my work I focus on creating an environment that is safe enough for clients to explore feelings and experiences, and to delve into the things that worry them. Clients I work with are often struggling with parenthood, marriage, partners, or children, personal relationships, or major changes in life. I love working with clients who are curious and engaged, and for clients seeking art therapy services, therapy is also a priority to provide new means of expression and healing.

Working with clients from ethnic minority groups is my passion; especially Brazilians, Latinos and Native Americans. Having experienced being an immigrant myself while living in Brazil, I am very aware of the unique difficulties facing newly arrived immigrants. Individuals needing assistance with school difficulties, parenting concerns, family conflict, marital discord, or functionally impairing mental health symptoms are my ideal client.

You may be feeling overwhelmed by stress and anxiety - whether it’s from external demands or internal struggles. Maybe it's social anxiety, "a life transition," or healing from trauma. Or maybe it's something more general, like you want to feel more "in control" of your emotions…and your life. I can help. Together, we’ll uncover the roots of your challenges, empowering you to move forward - with skill and confidence. I use “treatments that work” (CBT, DBT, mindfulness, etc). But we’ll find what works for YOU. Lastly, I don’t just want you to just “feel better.” I want you to live your best life. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

No matter how hard we try in life, inevitably we come across unpredictable waters. Sometimes riding the waves of life can be delightful and sometimes it can be soul crushing. Thus, I seek to help high functioning adults and adolescents to "embrace uncertainty and live joyfully through the process."

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
