I work from a psychodynamic perspective, and utilize many approaches, including dialectical behavioral therapy ( DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based practices, among others.
We all deserve to live our lives as fully and authentically as we can, and therapy can be a great support in that. I aim to create an open and safe space in which you can explore the patterns, behaviors, and beliefs that you may feel stuck in, and that are no longer serving you. As we build a trusting, supportive, and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, we’ll work together to identify concrete goals and utilize evidence-based practices to achieve them.

I specialize in Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT) and in the treatment of trauma-related, mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders.
We live in a world that is both beautiful and painful. When the beauty seems hard to find, and the pain becomes too hard to hold, a therapist can help you find joy and meaning.  Therapy can help you move toward what matters most, feel more balanced and connected, and experience life intentionally in the imperfect present. If you have questions about my practice or would like to schedule a consultation, please visit my website at lizandersonlicswma.com or contact me via email (preferred) or phone.

My training is in psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, Somatic Experiencing and EMDR.
Social and political distress are causing fear and alienation, along with feelings of disempowerment and personal inadequacy with less community for us to count on. My way of working with this is to help clients become more aware of their own internal wisdom and connection to all things. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relational difficulties or just feeling overwhelmed. Listening to your story and using Somatic Experiencing, a mind/body approach, I work to help you find your sense of balance, curiosity, resilience, engagement, and vitality.

I use many different modalities anywhere from formal methods like DBT/CBT, to TED talks and inspirational videos to help move difficult issues.
I work mostly with clients suffering with anxiety, PTSD, depression, and substance use issues, but I have experience with many different mental health diagnoses. I see clients needing help with goal-setting, limiting core values and beliefs, shame, fear, negative self-esteem, and trauma symptoms.

Skills training, including DBT, supports effective management of intense emotional experiences and relationship challenges.
There's a delicate balance between accepting oneself as you are and making the changes you deeply desire. Cultivating quiet and stillness allows you to listen to your inner knowing and the answers you are seeking. My own spiritual practice informs me as I honor and support your personal journey. What's most essential for healing is the relationship between client and therapist. Clients have described their experience with me as open, deeply caring, respectful, irreverent, collaborative, both gentle and direct, grounding and real.

I use an integrated and holistic approach, combining relational, intersectional, Dialectical Behavioral, somatic, narrative, and other frameworks to tailor each session to meet your needs.
I believe that every human is on a challenging, exciting, complex, and unique journey through life, and that each of us need different types of support to make this adventure the best it can be. As a therapist, it’s my primary joy to walk alongside you on your path to heal wounds, amplify your current strengths, cultivate new ones, strengthen your relationships, set and achieve personal goals, and, importantly, find opportunities to find joy along the way. This can include working to reduce anxiety and depression, navigating family relationships and/or systemic oppression, processing and mitigating the impacts of trauma, etc.

My background includes a range of influences and mindfulness-based models including ACT, DBT, IFS, and Narrative Therapy.
We all have a story to tell and we are all driven to make meaning of our lives. Much of our suffering—those times of depression, anxiety, and discontent—arises when the weight of the past and the pressures of the present become overwhelming and we lose our sense of being the author of our own story. I have found that when we are allowed to speak in a compassionate space, to be heard, and to welcome our true selves—even the parts of ourselves that we struggle with—we uncover strengths we didn't know we had. We discover possibilities for change and new relationships, and freedom from old and limiting beliefs. We regain our storyline.

I also have expertise in mindfulness-based behavioral therapies, including DBT/ACT.
I am a psychologist with over twenty-five years of experience who specializes in helping people who identify as highly sensitive or anxious. You may have received feedback from others that your feelings are “wrong” or “too much.” Such messages frequently result in experiencing harsh self-criticism and shame. I help my clients embrace the many gifts of being sensitive while also navigating a world that often feels harsh and invalidating. I work with adults of diverse ages and backgrounds, providing a warm, connecting, and honest space for you to access your essential strengths and overcome barriers to living a rich, meaningful life.

There are many reasons that people seek out therapy. For some, it may be to find clarity, discover ways to ease anxiety, improve mood or functioning, or even process difficult events and challenges that they have experienced throughout life. Seeking support and help is the first courageous step towards a more empowered sense of self.

Everyone hopes to find a Therapist they will match well with in terms of personality and professional style, especially when they are suffering. Deep listening, compassion, and promotion of self-care and coping are values at the center of my practice. I attune topics and activities toward those that the client is most interested in exploring. Integrated Relational Therapy is the holistic, versatile framework that I use to meet teen and adult clients "where they're at" to address issues like trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, relationships, and addiction; through individual, family, and couples counseling.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
