I am a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor located in Dorchester, Massachusetts. I have worked in substance abuse for 8 years by helping men and women fight their addictions. As someone who has personally witnessed the struggles of battling drug addiction, I have come to understand that “the change is in the thinking...not the doing.” This means that any changes we want to make must begin with the way we think about things. Our thoughts impact our actions. Thoughts may be deeply impacted by past traumas, anxiety, the environment in which you were raised, depression, or relationships, and may prevent us from being our best selves.

As a BIPOC therapist, I strive to provide culturally sensitive & affirming therapy across social identities to assist with substance misuse/dual diagnosis, LGBTQIA2S+ care, probation, and addressing the impact of systemic challenges in the narrative.
Hello! I am a licensed addictions therapist with a background in social work, and I work with individuals motivated to maintain their recovery journey and learn more about themselves along the way. I have a diverse background due to my experiences across the gambit of settings from inpatient detox and residential centers, community based programming, state prisons, and outpatient clinics. As such, I work with adults to process trauma and daily stressors that may be impacting their ability to become the version of themselves they wish to achieve.

My name is Mary Sebatindira, I have been a psychotherapist for over 9 years. I have worked with many populations which include: adults struggling with addiction, children/teens, and family work.

My priority is to help folks either still struggling with addiction or beginning the recovery journey.
Are you experiencing problems with drugs or alcohol? Do you find yourself caught up in a cycle of other addictive behaviors such as gaming, the Internet or gambling? I have good news and bad news for you. First the bad news: it takes effort to stop addictive behaviors, and to address the underlying emotional or trauma issues that compel you to relapse over and over again. There’s no magic wand, no Abracadabra. Now the good news. The cycle doesn’t have to be endless, and recovery is possible! I do individual, couples and family counseling.

I have worked for over a decade with people who struggle with relationships, self-esteem and self-worth, addiction, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and the general desire to build a better life for themselves.
Life can be tough. Trauma, relationships, and brain chemistry may contribute to uncontrollable emotions and the inability to cope with people and situations. It is not easy, and there are no quick fixes, but healing is possible. Everyone is different, and thus therapy should be tailored accordingly to individual needs. Our work will be collaborative to make sure you are getting the support that aligns with your personality, experiences, and goals. My approach emphasizes realistic approaches to meet you where you are.

Mental health is how we think, feel and act as we cope with life. It helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Like physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Everyone feels worried, anxious, sad or stressed sometimes. But with a mental illness, these feelings do not go away and are severe enough to interfere with your daily life. It can make it hard meeting and keeping friends, hold a job or enjoy life. "Get plugged In". You cannot wish your problems away. Therapy can help.

My ideal client is open and honest in her presentation and is eager to work on identified issues. This client is committed to treatment and arrives weekly (or biweekly) for therapy sessions as per treatment agreement. Ideally, my clients would be somewhat self-reflective, although this is not a requirement. Self-reflection tends to promote the development of insight.

Our trauma can leave us with feelings of shame, resentment, and guilt. When we don't take the time for our own recovery and healing, we can find ourselves becoming stressed and overwhelmed. We become unrecognizable to ourselves and disconnected from our own needs. Our physical health is impacted. We experience spiraling thoughts and an inability to relax. Our anger and sadness are easily triggered. We sabotage our important relationships. We lack trust and fear intimacy. We find ourselves feeling undeserving of the goodness life has to offer.

Are you genuinely curious about unhelpful patterns that seem to keep showing up in your life and relationships? Do you ask why you can't let things go, have trust issues, or the inability to relax? Real change can only occur when you are genuinely curious about uncovering recurring patterns and are motivated to try out new strategies to break them.

Providing individual psychotherapy for clients in need. Also offering supervision for LCSWs who are working toward independent licensure. As human beings, we each deserve a virtuous, healthy quality of life. While the days, weeks, and months pass by it can be easy to lose touch with ourselves; our own individual needs.

I specialize in working with people struggling with anxiety, depression, and addiction.
I am looking to work with people who are not satisfied with how things are in their life, and ready to take control in order for their lives to improve. In addition to actively listening and problem solving, I coach individuals to activate specific techniques designed to be applied throughout their daily lives. It is in the hands of the individual to apply these skills in order to reach their goals. If an individual is not quite there, we'll work together to figure out what's blocking their potential.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
