Using an integrative approach we begin to identify and process patterns and parts that impede change.
"Life feels too hard, too disappointing, too scary. I feel like a terrible person." Feelings are normal. We all have them but sometimes we become overwhelmed and get stuck in patterns that repeat unsatisfying results over and over. Whether from trauma, grief, low self esteem, addictive behaviors or attachment disruptions, I can help you shift toward greater satisfaction and ease in your life by listening and working together to focus in on core areas that have become barriers to your well being.

I practice therapy from an integrative perspective which enables me to take a holistic approach towards understanding my clients’ experiences.
I am a clinical psychologist who works with adolescents and young adults struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, trauma, and interpersonal difficulties. In addition to working as a therapist, I hold faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital, where I previously worked as a staff psychologist and continue to serve as a supervisor. My experience in these roles enables me to work effectively with individuals whose distress is particularly overwhelming and incapacitating.

My approach to therapy is integrative, combining CBT, Psychodynamic and Relational models, along with skills drawn from Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Mind/Body mindfulness.
I assist clients who are wanting to improve their lives in significant ways. While I specialize in treating eating disorders, anxiety and depression, most clients also come to me with related issues of trauma, self-confidence, struggles with change/transition, work, family relationships and other stressors. I see therapy as a collaborative process taking place in the context of an empathic relationship where support and appropriate challenge are offered. I encourage individuals to learn about themselves, understand the meaning behind symptoms and develop skills that enable them to take positive action toward well-being.

I've been the Director of Psychology Training at a large Veterans hospital since 1999, and for ten years during that time I was Director of the Center for Integrative Psychotherapy.
I incorporate a broad range of perspectives and clinical principles in an overall integrative approach to psychotherapy. At the foundation of my work is an appreciation of each individual's capacity to heal and grow and a respect for each individual's path. My desire is to assist people in living an authentic, self-aware, and satisfying life. In my couples work, I strive to assist each partner in deepening their own self-understanding and compassionately holding the experience of their partner, as the couple works together to better understand and best tend or heal their relationship.

Grounded in Existential Psychotherapy but practicing an integrative approach, I became a therapist because I had good therapy myself.
How will I - a California trained LMFT – be more effective for you? Unlike many Massachusetts counselors based in the “medical model” I don’t treat symptoms, I treat systems. I’ll work with you and partners/spouses or family members, if you choose to include them, to identify not "What’s wrong with me?” but rather, “How'd I get here?” We’re all products of our childhood. I'll work with you to identify and challenge the faulty agreements forced upon you before you could defend yourself against them, co-discover alternate viewpoints about yourself and the world and then enact these new agreements to create a new life.

Many young people who come to meet with me are apprehensive about therapy. They might worry that I will be silent, expecting them to fill the space with what's difficult to express. Alternatively, they might have encountered therapists who speak more than listen, resulting in a session that feels like a class. Therapy is an investment of time and resources. If you're willing to open yourself up to me, I can promise you that you will be heard, and I will engage authentically. My job is to help you grow to weather emotional storms and build the life you want.

Are you a parent who has a struggling child and you don’t know how to help them? Do you want to be a great parent but feel like you don’t speak your child’s language? Children have so much to say, and adults often don’t understand their language. I help young children communicate how they are feeling, and partner with their parents to support them.

You want to appear like you’ve got it all together, but deep down you are struggling to feel confident in who you are. You’re someone who is decisive in your career, but still find yourself sad and anxious, struggling with relationships, and feeling undervalued by loved ones. Each day feels like the one before it, questioning when you’ll finally break the cycle of feeling down about yourself. But you’re ready to make a change. You’re ready to restore your inner peace. You’re ready to reclaim the confidence that you used to have. Most of all, you’re ready to feel joy once again. I want to help you get there.

Integrative Therapists

What is integrative therapy?

Integrative therapy is a type of therapy that combines ideas and techniques from different therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of the individual client. By merging elements of different treatments, an integrative therapist aims to offer a more flexible approach than those who practice just one type of therapy.

How does integrative therapy work?

Integrative therapy approaches a client’s mental, physical, and emotional health in a holistic way to discover the sources of their unhealthy behavior patterns or other challenges and considers the approach most likely to lead to improvement. Among the techniques an integrative therapist may practice are cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, mindfulness, art or music therapy, psychodynamic therapy, breathwork, family systems therapy, gestalt therapy, and trauma-informed therapy. An integrative therapist regularly evaluates the client’s progress and is prepared to pivot to a different approach if progress stalls.

How long does integrative therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for integrative therapy; people who find they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that spurred them to seek treatment. New patients should understand that it may take some time for a therapist to land on a treatment approach that best meets their needs, but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

How effective is integrative therapy?

There are hundreds of types of talk therapy, and research shows that while they vary in form, goals, and frequency, many if not all can produce similarly successful outcomes. But a single approach does not always deliver the greatest, or speediest, benefit, and so even therapists primarily trained in one model will use tools, language, techniques, or exercises from others to shape an effective treatment plan.
