Change is hard, but less so with help. I hope I can be your guide through the change process. I am a clinical psychologist trained in CBT. I have a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School and am on staff in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. I run a private practice on Sunday mornings and have intermittent availability during the rest of the week. I am comfortable providing treatment in an individual or family context, whichever better fits your needs. I am results driven, but also warm and sensitive.

The people I see are interested in working hard on the core issues interfering with their relationships and work. Therapy happens in real time in one's life, and should aim to resolve these issues without delay. When I see people initially, and when I teach other therapists, I emphasize that a feeling that something real is happening, that it is having an impact, should be part of the process from the beginning, even if one recognizes there is a lot of work to do.

The de mands of school, work, family and social relationships can be overwhelming for people of all ages. Societal pressures may add to our stress. We all need support as we navigate the different stages of our lives. We can get stuck, feel very low, or become increasingly anxious along the way. Children and adolescents may express or cope with these difficult emotions with troubling behavior. Parents often feel helpless or lost trying to support their children. Individual and family psychotherapy can help us better understand and manage our emotions, increase our sense of worth and control, and live a more fulfilling life.

My experience centers on working with adults on presenting issues like mood disorders, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, and anger management.
Fall 2024 - Accepting New Clients! Whether managing short-term or long-term stress, I value making a space for clients to take a moment to stop, step back from what they're doing and take a look from the outside. In a comfortable space with a supportive therapeutic relationship, clients can best understand themselves and disentangle challenges of daily life. I believe in helping clients identify what defines them as an individual, and how to best fulfill the things in life that are important to them. I also value awareness of identities relating to culture, ethnicity, gender and sex, and how they affect clients' values and goals.

As a psychologist with nearly a decade of clinical experience, I’ve worked with many individuals struggling with their thoughts and emotions and helped them find greater meaning, satisfaction, and joy in life.
Have you lost interest in activities that used to bring you joy? Do you lack motivation to meet your responsibilities? Do you feel overwhelmed with life's tasks and worry incessantly about the future? Have you had trouble falling or staying asleep due to overthinking? Do you tense up in social situations? If you responded yes to any of the above you are likely experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms. These can be very painful and unfortunately are very common. Avoiding or ignoring these feelings will not make them go away but together we can face them and launch you on a journey to optimal mental health.

The way psychotherapy is practiced has a lot to do with the mind set and life experience of the psychologist. I have been in private practice since 1980, and beyond the traditional training for psychologists, I also trained extensively in an approach known as Psychology of Mind, or Health Realization. This is a cognitive approach that is very down-to-earth but rooted in principles akin to those behind meditation, yoga and similar traditions that were developed to enhance optimal hu man functioning.

Everyone deserves a life that they’re proud of and dare I say excited for–even you. If your life isn’t what you thought it’d be, if you have challenges you’re struggling to overcome, if you’re not adjusting the way you thought you'd be, or if you're just not satisfied and want more from your life, you’re not alone and getting support is completely okay. While finding and working with a therapist can seem daunting, the therapy itself doesn't have to be. Sometimes it can be fun and restoring, and yes, at other times it can feel vulnerable. Along the way, we'll find what works best, and I promise to go at your pace.

I have 20 years of experience as a clinical social worker and prior to that was a home-based family counselor. I view my role as helping the person clarify troubling life experiences, past and present, and to understand their responses to those experiences. These may include: difficult relationships and families, unresolvable ambiguity; agonies of adolescence; substance and alcohol abuse, or legacies of trauma and existential dilemmas. I believe each person contains the seeds of their own solution and I work to nurture that individual solution. This happens in a relationship where it becomes safe to "say anything."

I work with clients about their relationship issues. Sometimes this involves problems with partners, parents, siblings, or children and sometimes this is about the relationship a person has with him/her self. The lack of meaningful/successful relationships is often a factor in people seeking therapy. The ensuing symptoms may be in the form of anxiety or depression. I like to meet with the people involved in the relationship problems, although the therapy often starts with a series of solo appointment. I view initial meetings as a consultation to check out the goodness of fit between a person's needs and my professional skills.

I have worked in Mental Health for the past 15 years, and have helped many clients using all of the above modalities.
I specialize in helping men, wo men, artists, business and trades people, as well as adult children of alcoholics restore diminished or lost connections to their poietic capacity. The word poiesis is from ancient Greek, meaning to make, or to bring forth. In my work, I refer to it as meaning one’s creative capacity to respond to and shape one’s life - as well as one’s capacity to create things i.e. art, woodwork, poetry, a relationship, a mindfulness practice, a career, a garden, etc. When we are overwhelmed, our mental health can suffer, sometimes making it difficult for us to respond to life's challenges in a way that works for us.

My area of specialty is working with men with a history of trauma.
The decision to engage in therapy is the first step in making a commitment to yourself towards healing. Congratulations. My work offers clients the opportunity to discuss life issues that are challenging to them and working towards a solution based focus of resolution that will bring them to inner peace and strength. This process is interactive and collaborative.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
