Connecting with the right therapist is one of the most important aspects of an effective therapeutic process. My approach to therapy is collaborative and influenced by the needs of each individual. I often meet clients when they feel stuck or overwhelmed. I have 20 years of experience helping people heal from the emotional wounds of trauma, loss, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, major mental illness, chronic or terminal illness, and chronic stress. I often work with those struggling to navigate the complexities of relationships, whether at work, interpersonally, or romantically.

In my 20+ years in the field, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals dealing with a wide range of challenges and experiences. Each person has their own unique experience in life and with mental health issues and stressors. I feel therapy should be individualized to the person and each session should aim to offer growth and insight. I offer space for folks to feel accepted, safe and heard. I am especially committed to treating the LGBTGIA+ community, those seeking gender affirming care (trans/NB), neurodiverse folks, people coping with chronic pain/medical issues. Issues specific to women and AFAB folks.

When we experience trauma, lose a loved one, have chronic pain or illness, or navigate difficult relationships, grief is present. If you are facing these or other challenges— such as depression, anxiety, infertility, or major life transitions – it can be helpful to have support. I partner with people to process grief, find healing, and move towards increased connection with self and others. My somatic therapy lens can support you in better understanding your body’s response to experiences, bolster self-compassion, and effectively navigate your life with more ease.

We have therapists that specialize in grief, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, family systems, life transitions, parenting.
What if each member of your home could find happiness? Lower stress? Improve behavior? Communicate more effectively? Stop walking on eggshells? Manage their emotions? What if life became a little easier or more bearable, or even enjoyable?! What if the tension was lower? We work with children, adults and family units to learn what those unhelpful thinking patterns are and how to change them; how to move away from isolation; change behavior so there are more positive outcomes; take back control of their emotions and their lives; connect more deeply.

My specialties are women’s issues, coping with chronic illness and life transitions, depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, relationship issues, loss and grief, and trauma.
We all experience stress, loss, and other challenges at some point in our lives. When we recognize that we are unhappy with how things are going, we can chose to ignore the problem or do something about it. If we are ready to take action to improve our situation, then seeking psychotherapy can be empowering. It can help us feel validated and regain a sense of control over our lives. As a psychologist for over 30 years, I provide a safe, non-judgmental, supportive environment in which to identify and explore these concerns, develop coping skills, and establish goals to bring about positive change.

May is more than just the gateway to summer; it's a month dedicated to shining a spotlight on one of the most critical yet often overlooked aspects of our well-being: mental health. Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder that mental health is a fundamental part of overall health and well-being. Just as we prioritize physical health through exercise, nutrition, and regular check-ups, we must also prioritize mental health through self-care, stress management, and seeking professional help when needed.

Compassion is the most significant and integral component of therapy. My goal is to create a warm, respectful environment in which clients feel comfortable exploring their innermost feelings. Genuine and empathic in my approach, I believe in the strength of the individual to face life's challenges and to create new patterns of behavior and communication. I also believe clients must have compassion for themselves. Such compassion will lead to greater curiosity of the self and acceptance of one's experiences. This, in turn, enables the individual to see more clearly, gain new perspectives and find new solutions.

Every one of us has endured pain in our lives. Those events can affect our sense of inner security and the ability to mobilize our strengths. Whatever your history may be, transforming the way your mind, body and soul remember the pain, will put you on the path of more freedom to be your preferred self, and experience your relationships and your life to the fullest. Therapy could be that safe space where you can envision a desired life and future for yourself, breathe new hope and possibilities, and develop effective coping strategies that can be carried out outside our sessions.

I am trained in EMDR, which can be used as an intervention for trauma healing, chronic pain, addiction recovery, and other issues.
I work with many types of clients, addressing various life issues, but my specialization is working with people who have experienced physical or emotional interpersonal abuse. This includes people targeted on the basis of gender, sexuality, or gender expression; race, ethnicity, or heritage; religious or faith beliefs/practices; or other aspects of identity. Most clients I work with have post-trauma, anxiety, and/or depression symptoms. I believe in the importance of helping clients explore the root causes of their symptoms, while also finding interventions to address those symptoms.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
