Now offering counseling appointments for pre-schoolers, children, teens & young adults for part-time summer and the 2024-25 school/college-year. The young people I see often have difficulty with impulsivity and self-regulation; anxiety, depression and low esteem; or are unable to focus. There may be social anxiety and feeling isolated from peers. Kids can get discouraged, disappointed or frustrated at school/home, giving up and withdrawing or resorting to behaviors that hurt them or get them into trouble. Kids really do want to do well, to succeed, to please others and feel loved. It is my pleasure to be with them during this time.

The demands of school, work, family and social relationships can be overwhelming for people of all ages. Societal pressures may add to our stress. We all need support as we navigate the different stages of our lives. We can get stuck, feel very low, or become increasingly anxious along the way. Children and adolescents may express or cope with these difficult emotions with troubling behavior. Parents often feel helpless or lost trying to support their children. Individual and family psychotherapy can help us better understand and manage our emotions, increase our sense of worth and control, and live a more fulfilling life.

I have worked extensively with children who have been exposed to traumas, suffer anxiety, have sleep issues, peer problems, impulsivity, and self esteem concerns.
I believe that therapy is most effective when there is a warm, supportive relationship between the therapist and child or teen. Does your child suffer from anxiety, trouble getting along with peers, depression, or behavioral problems? Therapy can help you child strengthen and learn new skills to address these concerns.

As a young human being, you may feel unsure about who you are — or why you were placed on this planet. You might struggle to connect with others, or feel anxious, irritable, or depressed without knowing why. But as Mr. Rogers tells us, "If it's mentionable, it's manageable." If you are looking for clarity on how to feel better in your body, improve your relationships, feel less isolated, identify and accomplish your goals, or just be more okay, you've come to the right place. As someone who transformed from a confused, anxious, and insecure teenage boy into an open and capable adult, I know that change is possible.

Let's think about our thinking. Curiosity and bravery are important aspects of any learning experience and these traits are equally important in psychotherapy. As a psychologist, I encourage my clients to be both brave and curious as we respectfully examine and process poignant thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Through this thoughtful process, the client is able to grow and gain self-confidence and improved internal emotional regulation. My goal or agenda for psychotherapy is not mine but yours, and I look forward to collaborating with you and bearing witness to your growth.

Beginning June 2024, I am accepting new clients in both my Boston and Arlington offices. While I work with a variety of people, many of my clients are students or young professionals who are struggling with self-confidence, productivity, and relationships. My typical client has many wonderful goals but can become easily overwhelmed by perfectionist tendencies. I help people explore current difficulties while also connecting these problems to past hurts or losses. Throughout our work, clients are also able to build concrete skills, allowing them to feel less anxious, more like themselves, and more connected in their relationships.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
