My training and experience are founded in psychodynamic and roots-up trauma informed approaches, EMDR and Internal Family Systems, with a focus on creating space for a client's integrated mind-body healing experience from the lasting impact of trauma and adverse experiences.
Taking the first step in seeking out psychotherapy can be overwhelming, and it also demonstrates a tremendous amount of courage. Our work together will allow you to hold both truths as you begin the journey towards an improved relationship with self and others. I approach the development of a therapeutic relationship as an opportunity for collaboration, curiosity, insight, and mutual respect. Many of the clients I work with have found temporary relief in past skills based therapeutic work, but are now seeking a deeper understanding of the experiences and relationships underlying current symptoms as a path to foundational healing.

Life is a journey, and from time to time, we all face challenges that we would benefit from discussing with a thoughtful and compassionate listener. I am such a person, plus I own this practice. While I believe therapy is a collaborative enterprise, I also believe when successful, therapy requires an active and experienced guide. I enjoy working with clients struggling with a variety of personal, family, and mental health issues. I have more than 20 years experience working as a therapist. My therapy orientation is eclectic though my foundation is psychodynamic and strengths based.

My approach is integrative, collaborative and psychodynamic.
Are you pregnant or have had a baby in the past 2 years? Are you experiencing intense anxiety or troubling, scary thoughts? Or maybe a profound sadness? Are you feeling completely overwhelmed? Have you experienced an infant loss? Is the reality of motherhood not what you expected? Do you have a history of anxiety/depression? Are shifts in mood part of your monthly cycle? If you answered Yes to any of these questions, you may be at risk of being the 1 in 5 women who experience perinatal anxiety/depression (PPA/PPD) as a complication of pregnancy and childbirth. 1 in 5 women. That’s a lot of moms. You are not alone. I can help.

How do you define good health and well-being? Stress, anxiety, and depression are part of life, especially post pandemic. At times life can feel chaotic and overwhelming for everyone. Knowing when to access help is an important part of managing overall health. As you know, stress and anxiety will always appear and reappear in our lives. Therapy may help you develop an understanding of how to live with stress and anxiety in a healthy way. Learning to change your relationship with negative thoughts, gain insight and awareness to unhealthy behavior, and learning to cultivate healthy thoughts and behavior are all part of the process.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
