I lead groups for Professionals in mental health who wish to carve out time for their own emotional care and needs; and for Young Adults, struggling with depression and anxiety around relationships and transitions . It is within the process of relationship-making (the engine that powers group), that patterns of interaction are revealed that hinder or enhance connecting with others. Group members feel heard and seen from which emerges a sense of self worth and belonging. Rome was not built in a day, however, and neither is real and lasting change for those of us stuck fighting old wars and narratives in ways no longer serving us.

(Yes, I do currently have an open slot.) Many people seek therapy because they feel "stuck" in the same relationship patterns, or are finding their relationships unsatisfying, empty, or chaotic. Some hope to find help with low self-esteem/confidence; with difficulty bouncing back from stress or trauma; or with feelings of emptiness or hopelessness. And some seek therapy with the simple goal of understanding themselves more deeply. Therapy can help with all of these goals. If these reasons sound like yours, I may be able to help. My specialty lies at the intersection of personality, relationship problems, and PTSD/trauma.

I believe that everyone deserves to be heard, regardless of their background or circumstances. Whether you are struggling with excessive worry or negative thoughts, overwhelmed by schoolwork as a student, supporting a family member with autism or developmental disability, or facing challenges as a member of a marginalized group in society, it is common to feel hopeless and worthless at times. However, you do not have to give in to these feelings. Together, we will overcome obstacles by empowering you, developing strategies for managing negative feelings, improving your self-identity, and gaining a deeper understanding of yourself.

There is not a singular source to our suffering. Turmoil can originate in, and travel through, our bodies, minds, communities, families, and sociopolitical systems. Often, we respond to inner turmoil in two extreme ways. We may excessively worry, attempt to control, develop repetitive, troubling thoughts, or just obsess about our lives. Or we may do the opposite; avoid, isolate, refuse contact with situations we perceive to be dangerous or distressing, or say 'it is hopeless,' and check out. Therapy can help us gain access to our grief and pain while developing the wisdom that comes with renewed commitment to our lives.

All human beings have within themselves the capacity for living happy, meaningful lives. We are meant to thrive, however it is quite common for distressing life experiences to interfere with our natural way of being. Sometimes obstacles are known to us, but have been resistant to change. Others remain hidden, but what we do notice clearly are psychological and emotional symptoms of distress (depression, fear and anxiety, emotional reactivity, irritability, addictions, etc.). These symptoms can significantly impact our quality of life, and almost always cause problems in relationships.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
