I offer expressive arts therapy and clinical mental health counseling.
The ideal client is motivated to continue to work with their inner child to become grounded in the present moment. They may have anxiety, mood disorders, or personality disorders, or they may not be sure what is underlying their experience, which I can help identify as well. The ideal clients are open to trying new methods of healing, including arts and spirituality. They are willing to trust me with their feelings and express them, whether that is verbally, through the expressive arts, or both.

My ideal client is often a little uncomfortable internally, manifested as anxiety or depression. Often, clients I work best with have a complex childhood that can filter into current relationships. My clients often love objective data (like I do) and will measure key components of their care to understand if they are improving over time.

My ideal client would seek therapy for their issues with processing trauma and acknowledging poor coping skills (such as addictions or low participation in life) used in the past to manage symptoms. They would want to use a cognitive behavioral approach to identify their cognitive distortions and negative thinking patterns and bring awareness and change to their behaviors.

I will guide you towards FEELING better and DOING better in your life–especially in your relationships! My belief and my experience shows me that we have within us deep wells of strengths, and the capacity to heal and move forward in our lives. But it sure helps to have someone in your corner: Together, we will understand your patterns (your internal patterns, and the patterns in your relationships). With my support, with new insights, and perhaps some new skills, you'll be read to make some positive changes: ...real progress, that lasts!

When appropriate, I enjoy finding creative opportunities using the expressive arts to help you to stay present, take risks, explore parts of yourself, and help you connect with yourself and others.
I invite you to “get curious” about yourself and what has contributed to your current challenges. Curiosity is essential to finding meaning and connection with others and ourselves. I will work with you to open up to uncertainty and learn to coexist with your uncomfortable thoughts and feelings in order to strengthen your relationship with yourself and others. You are not a problem to be fixed; you are a whole, complex, and amazing person. I look forward to helping you to open up to your innate gifts. I currently have limited daytime openings Monday-Thursday.

I'm an Expressive Arts Therapist with a mission: empower clients through authentic, self-expression conversation and artistic modalities.
I specialize in relationship trauma, particularly cult recovery, with adults. I work with people who are gentle souls, have been called "too sensitive" and simply find this world hard to navigate. Our society sometimes turns sensitivity & thoughtfulness into pathologies. If you're empathic and contemplative, not only is there nothing wrong with you, we need more of you!

During sessions, I may utilize role-playing, assist you with skills-based techniques, or expressive arts like music and art.
I have experience working with people of various ages and backgrounds. I enjoy working with adolescents and adults and utilize a strengths-based approach. During our time together, we may focus on building coping skills and challenge any thoughts and behaviors through CBT and reframing. I work hard to be culturally sensitive and understand that everyone functions within their specific cultural background. I enjoy working with new parents and people experiencing a recent life transition. Together, we can explore healthy ways of getting through difficult situations.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
