Welcome! I believe that a meaningful therapeutic relationship starts with trust and a genuine connection between client and therapist. I understand that beginning therapy can feel overwhelming, and my goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, supported, and able to move toward positive change at a pace that feels right for you.

An ideal client would come in with complex issues/stressors and be able to talk freely. Perhaps this client is not as self-aware as they thought they were and need help poking holes in different mindsets or beliefs to expand how they view certain things.

I understand the importance of developing resilience-to-change in order to effectively cope with major life transitions (marriage, birth of a child, retirement, new job). Without such resilience, life can feel overwhelming, self esteem becomes precarious, and mood can dip dramatically. Through my warm, direct, highly interactional approach (elaborated at www.marshavannicelli.com), I collaborate with clients to address behaviors that continue to cause pain. My books, teaching and supervision have provided training for 100s of other clinicians to help their clients to feel more empowered in relationship and to fulfill their potential

Therapy is an opportunity to make changes (in mood, anxiety, behavior, work, school, relationships, lifestyle, etc.), and it can feel like climbing a mountain--simultaneously terrifying, frustrating, and exhilarating. As your therapist, I'll be by your side keeping the summit in sight even when you can see only seemingly endless rocks and ice ahead. I am a down-to-earth, pragmatic, general therapist (with a sense of humor). I integrate psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, motivational enhancement, and stress reduction principles and techniques into treatment based on your needs, goals, and the best strategy to reach the view from the top.

Life is a beautiful, but at times overwhelming adventure. Do you feel stuck in the struggle of the day-to-day? Do you try to make the most of moments with your children, while also feel as though you are drowning, and not enough? Have you been through a trauma that has changed the way you view your world, and can’t find a way back to being the main character in your own story? Does anxiety limit you from achieving what you want, or who you know you can be? I’ve spent the last 15 years of my life helping people like you. Whatever your goals, therapy is a wonderful step towards becoming the best version of yourself.

I utilize evidence-based approaches including but not limited to CBT and ACT. The spiritual heart of my work, though, aligns best with a model called IFS which helps us makes sense of our internal conflicts, contradictions, and self-undermining behavior. I work to support my clients in releasing from well-worn patterns of self-criticism, anxiety, irritability, guilt, or sadness that keep them stuck, to establish more vital ways of engaging in the world.

Are you experiencing attention or memory issues, brain fog, or other cognitive-based difficulties? Are these impacting your relationships, job/career success, or self-esteem? I conduct neuropsychological evaluations through comprehensive testing, after which I provide tailored recommendations based on your own relative strengths and areas of needed improvement. I also regularly see people who are recovering from brain injury (TBI/concussions, head trauma, new-onset neurological diagnoses), who might be struggling with cognitive, emotional, and/or psychological recovery.

I'm not sure I believe in an Ideal client; I think all clients are Ideal, no matter their life circumstances. Life is like a rollercoaster, and when you're going down, you may need someone to be there and help talk you through it. However, If I had to choose, it would be a client having difficulty with self-esteem, self-worth, and depressive symptoms and needing additional assistance building coping skills but expressing readiness to change.

You've sought me out for counseling because you experience a significant discrepancy in your life between how you feel and how you'd like to feel. You're seeking to have positive mental health, that is, to know yourself, to be yourself, to expand your capacity to care for yourself and others and your world, to maintain humility, and to maintain hope. You're aware of the fluctuating nature of your functionality: at times you function well, and at other times you don't function as well as you'd like to. You're aware that, at times, you have experienced distress, that is, difficult life moments. You're ready to create a better life.

As human beings we often make sense of the world and our lived experience through creating stories. It's these narratives, some inherited, others created, many retold that help shape our lives. However, sometimes these scripts can be outdated making it challenging to move forward. Many of the people who come through my practice share the same experience of feeling stuck in patterns or what I have come to refer to as, “old tapes.” Together, we will welcome the many parts of yourself that you bring into the room, leaning especially into those that yearn to be seen such as those parts of us that carry shame, grief and painful burdens.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
