I have advanced training in Couples Therapy (including Emotionally Focused Therapy, EFT), Group Therapy and Individual Psychotherapy/Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
Are you as happy as you'd like to be? I can help you understand and address the root causes of what's blocking you from accomplishing what you want in life. Whether it's help with a recent 'life transition' situation, or dealing with longer-standing issues of depression, anxiety or difficulties in relationships, I'm confident I can help.

Your relationship used to be fantastic. You and your partner felt connected; had fun together; and could talk about anything. More recently, things haven’t been going as well, and you don’t want them to get worse. You still love each other, but you’re having more disagreements. Perhaps the busyness of life has l eft you with less quality time together and feeling a little lonely or unappreciated. You want to reconnect, but miscommunication keeps getting in the way. Alternatively, your relationship is doing well, and you’d like a “tune-up” to keep it that way, so it doesn’t go bad like other relationships you see.

Offering a compassionate, safe place in which you can explore current life challenges that may be difficult to face alone. Relationship conflicts, separations, loss, job changes, eating problems and other addictions, medical illness, mid-life and other transitions often require working in partnership with someone who can help you find your own inner resources to move forward in your life. I have thirty-six years of experience as a medical practitioner working with diverse populations, including college students, young, middle age and older adults. I bring that experience to my psychotherapy work, recognizing the whole person, mind, body and spirit.

Conflict in relationships is normal. But prolonged conflict can break even the most successful relationships. If you or your partner perceives, feels and experiences this conflict in a harmful manner the two of you need to see a "Relationship Expert" who can help you master "Healthy Interactions". Couple therapy provides a safe, mediated environment to not only explore your emotions and perceptions but implement "Effective Tools" to create permanent change. I am a big believer in homework and accountability. Your time with me will not be wasted and I expect my clients to work hard.

If there is one thing we can count on in life is change--expected or unexpected; wanted or unwanted. Perhaps it is a loss, a difficult transition, a new diagnosis, chronic pain, becoming a caregiver, parenting a child with a disability--it could be anything that significantly alters your life plans, your relationships, expectations, sense of self, and day-to-day functioning. People often experience depression, anxiety, relational tension, and feel overwhelmed when faced with a challenging life issue, whether the challenge is short or long-term.

I am Certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy ( EFT), a proven method for working with couples, individuals and families.
As humans, we are wired for connection. When we feel connected to our loved ones, not only do we feel closer to them, we do better in the rest of our lives. So, of course, when we have difficulty connecting with the people we are closest to, it is painful and distressing. We can get into cycles where the arguments sound and feel the same regardless of what they are about. And these cycles are hard to break on our own.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
