My speciality areas include stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and insomnia.
Life can make us feel stuck, unsure, down, scared, stressed, and emotionally drained. With all of life's transitions, ups and downs, adjustments, and surprises, it's no wonder that sometimes we all need a boost. Hope for a better tomorrow can be the first step in making change towards a brighter future. Being vulnerable to take that first step can be a difficult one, however one that can bring transformation, clarity, understanding, and validation that can keep us moving forward.

I have an extensive background with people experiencing difficult relationships, anxiety, depression, and serious medical conditions.
Hi, I am a psychologist with over 20 years of experience. Do you feel stuck and things don't seem to be working out? No one expects to feel overwhelmed, but it happens to all of us. The question then becomes, “What’s next?” Psychotherapy has been scientifically shown to be helpful for people struggling with emotional stress, anxiety, and depression. I have the background to provide new ideas and structure for your concerns.

I assist clients in developing healthier coping and inter-personal skills that address topics related to: assertiveness, anger management, parenting strategies, managing mood disorders (anxiety and depression), impulse control, PTSD (EMDR), life transitions, grief, conflict resolution, mindfulness, sexuality, and stress management.
I think it is extremely courageous to admit we need help. I believe one of the most important criteria for successful treatment is to have a trusting, open, "therapeutic rapport" with a client. Without trust and a good connection, the therapeutic process cannot begin. With that in mind, I believe the first step is creating an environment safe from judgement and rich in support. My focus is to enable clients to acquire insight, skills, and motivation for emotional, cognitive, and behavioral transitions.I specialize in older adolescent and adult individual therapy as well as family and couples counseling.

I specialize in working with women who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, relational issues, self-esteem, transitions, and general life stress.
It takes courage and commitment to begin the therapy process. My approach is to create a warm, validating, and safe place in which we can explore your life’s challenges. We will work together to find ways to help you manage difficulties, calm your system, understand your patterns, improve your communication and relationships, and make more conscious choices. I will meet you where you are, and we will work on figuring out where you want to go and how to get there. I enjoy working with those who are new to therapy or who are seeking a fresh approach.

I work most often treating symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
My work aims to help individuals and couples better understand themselves in relation to the world around them and to their life experiences. I work with clients above age 16 all the way through the lifecycle. A specific focus of treatment is becoming more aware of habitual negative thinking and what drives those thoughts. I believe that when there is self-awareness, there can be behavior change. I offer a unique form of therapy, Mindfulness Meditation Therapy, where I teach meditation and mindfulness practices while processing the moment to moment experience.

If there is one thing we can count on in life is change--expected or unexpected; wanted or unwanted. Perhaps it is a loss, a difficult transition, a new diagnosis, chronic pain, becoming a caregiver, parenting a child with a disability--it could be anything that significantly alters your life plans, your relationships, expectations, sense of self, and day-to-day functioning. People often experience depression, anxiety, relational tension, and feel overwhelmed when faced with a challenging life issue, whether the challenge is short or long-term.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
