I help adults free their minds from the grip of stress, fixations and unhelpful habits so they can be more present in their lives and skillful with their time, focus and choices. For many, they struggle with stage-of-life demands, caught between lists of expectations yet with a deep, guttural need to recapture vitality and fresh perspective about their life path. They feel held back by something. Others seek ways to abate the stress that unhelpful attachments breed. My clients seek change, not book recommendations. I offer them a forward-moving, holistic, mind-body, active and engaged approach that encourages their evolving self.

Eric believes therapy is a collaborative process in which the client is the expert in themselves and steers the ship and he helps to support them through what can be difficult, though necessary and important change. At the base of Eric’s work is a collaborative, empathic, non-judgemental, hopeful and accepting approach in which a unique relationship can form to help facilitate change and allow a person to become more accepting, patient, curious and compassionate towards themselves.

Relationships can be a place of deep connection and fulfillment, and yet the source of pain, suffering and conflict. Often both. The underlying foundation of love is there, but disagreements, small or large, can feel extremely painful and frustrating. You may vacillate between either pushing feelings to the side and trying to “just let it go”, or exploding because you just can’t stand it anymore. Is there a way to navigate this more gracefully? How can we communicate in a way that leads to understanding, closeness, love and authentic connection, rather than bitter arguments?

Walking into a therapist's office is an act of courage. Psychotherapy is challenging, collaborative work. A pivotal piece of psychotherapy is finding the right match in selecting your therapist. In my practice, the therapeutic alliance is formed only after the client feels truly heard and understood. Thereafter, a treatment plan is formulated and the work begins.

Things that happened to us in childhood create how we see ourselves and how we show up in relationships. Whether through neglect or abuse, we give up on our feelings, needs, vulnerability, and human connection. And as a result, as adults we feel alone, anxious, or hopeless. I can help you claim what was not afforded to you while you were growing up. And live a life with vitality, flow, a sense of belonging, depth in relationship, and authentic aliveness. I have master level training to help you find personal freedom from the past and live your best days now. You can make shifts that are life changing and long term!

I am a clinical psychologist in practice in Amherst since 1989. I work with a wide range of people, from college aged through older adults, and with a wide range of problems and issues including: negative or vulnerable self-image, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, losses, and life transitions. I strive to provide a warm, safe, collaborative, open atmosphere in which to help people find relief from suffering and enhanced vital engagement in living. I believe that pathways to growth and healing often involve increasing awareness of underlying self-defeating patterns in the ways people experience and live their lives.

I am currently accepting new clients! The most significant factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. With this in mind, I adopt a warm and collaborative approach with each client. I enjoy working with a wide variety of issues, including treating mood disorders such as depression and anxiety; addressing relationship challenges and life transitions; supporting recovery from substance abuse; exploring issues of racial and cultural identity; and enhancing skills for management of trauma history.

Offering Parenting Consultations ONLY (sorry, I am not taking on new, individual clients). For 15 years, I've specialized in working with kids and their families, but I rarely have openings and often have to turn away parents who need help. I know how frustrating it is for parents to find therapists with openings, and with this in mind, I now am offering a series of three consultation sessions for parents to gain further insight into the roots of what their child is experiencing, and how parents can help. While my consultations are not a replacement for therapy, parents have said our meetings are extremely helpful.

I work with adults, adolescents and children. I am especially interested in helping men improve their communication skills in intimate relationships, and, in parenting; fostering their ability to identify and articulate their feelings, and, being more empathic of the other person.

We all encounter times in life when we just feel stuck and overwhelmed, sometimes unsure of why we feel this way and unable to move forward. Psychotherapy helps us to achieve a sense of well-being and make changes in our lives. My hope is to create a safe and supportive therapeutic environment, which will allow you to achieve personal growth. I utilize a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapies with components of mindfulness and solution-focused approaches. I work with adults of all ages and older adolescents.

I have a few openings for adult psychotherapy clients. If you have masshealth insurance, you must be 21 years or older (because I am no longer chins certified). I trained mostly in outpatient settings and have been in private practice for approximately 10 years. I have experience working with many psychological issues, but am not set up to treat eating disorders or active substance / alcohol dependence. I am otherwise open to working with just about anyone, provided I think I can be helpful. I prefer email to make an initial appointment. I will respond to you within a few days if you reach out via email.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
