In individual therapy, I take a person-centered, humanistic approach to the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills.
Are you noticing that you or a loved one is struggling with procrastination, time management, or following through on tasks? Have you received a diagnosis of ADHD or ADD or has it been suggested that you might meet criteria for these disorders? I am a licensed psychologist working at The Haffey Center in Amherst, MA specializing in both ADHD assessment and treatment. I am able to conduct an ADHD assessment battery and write a comprehensive report based on the results of that testing. I am also able to provide ADHD coaching and ADHD-informed psychotherapy based on the latest research in ADHD and symptom management.

I have been doing, teaching, and supervising psychotherapy continuously since 1969, and I still love it. I tailor my style to the needs of each person, drawing on Psychodynamic, Humanistic/Existential, Cognitive Behavioral, and Eye Movement Accelerated Resolution Therapies. I work with adults, seeking individual or couples therapy. And I am experienced with the full range of issues, from simple phobias to major affective and thought disorders. I believe patient-therapist match is extremely important and for that reason offer free initial, in person consultations. My office is located in Northampton, Massachusetts, and offers privacy, convenient parking, and pleasant surroundings.

I am influenced by humanistic, psychodynamic, and mindfulness approaches and utilize EMDR, spirituality, and expressive therapies including art, sandtray and music.
Looking for an EMDR therapist can be challenging. For those looking for the first time, I'd like to offer some thoughts on finding one who's right for you. While credentials and experience have their place, at the end of the day the most important thing is fit. I encourage you to "go with your gut." Do a phone consult. Did they give you space to talk? Did you feel heard? Sometimes what we need is feeling supported by someone who "gets" us. Other times we grow from someone who is able to challenge us in just the right way.

We are all one step away from the next unexpected crisis or life-affirming experience; its outcomes are ultimately determined by how we perceive and move through or around each situation. As a long-standing African- American mental health practitioner and social worker, I would love to offer you a therapeutic space that helps you bear witness to, contemplate, and even begin to address safely and at a self-driven pace the reason you seek therapy in the first place that contributions to your current circumstances or compromises your ability to live a life of purpose, value, and belonging.

We are living in unprecedented times filled with great challenge and incredible opportunity for growth. Global and personal events can leave us feeling isolated, disconnected, anxious and depressed. We search for meaning and purpose amidst the overwhelm of loss, transition, disease and chronic pain. Yet, this chaos can be the grit that moves us toward greater awareness and freedom. Support, connection, compassion and skilled guidance can help us forge new pathways in our lives, our brains and our bodies. We then have more capacity to reclaim our inherent joy, creativity and the power to build a positive light-filled future.

Walking into a therapist's office is an act of courage. Psychotherapy is challenging, collaborative work. A pivotal piece of psychotherapy is finding the right match in selecting your therapist. In my practice, the therapeutic alliance is formed only after the client feels truly heard and understood. Thereafter, a treatment plan is formulated and the work begins.

Most of my clients are interested in what their inner world is trying to tell them through dreams, emotions, physical symptoms, etc. Anxiety, depression, anger, compulsion, illness, PTSD, etc. are the body/mind's way of guiding us as to how we need to grow. My clients want to discover, heal, and come to terms with their inner truth. My training and personal experience with verbal and nonverbal/somatic processes enable us to access the dynamic flow between the conscious mind and the unconscious. As clients learn to dialogue with the unconscious they discover their own truth. I am grateful to the unconscious for this guidance.

I have over 30 years of experience as a therapist working with clients who struggle with trauma, life transitions, anxiety, depression, self-esteem concerns, relationship issues, and grief and loss. As an interpersonal and relational therapist, I view the relationship between client and therapist as integral in gaining a deep understanding of clients’ emotional experiences. By exploring important insights, this approach establishes a healing connection and allows the client to break repetitive, intergenerational patterns. I work to create an environment which helps to foster agency as well as the ability to work towards change.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
