The most important ingredient in a successful therapy experience is the therapy relationship itself. The clients who benefit the most are those who feel understood, respected and cared about, and so are better able to be more genuine and more fully engaged in the process. A basic tenet of my approach is that our fears and hurts inhibit the natural tendency within us all to grow and move toward healthier ways of functioning. Individuals who feel safe enough in therapy to face their fears can begin to "digest" their unfinished business and take back control of their lives.
Many of my clients are professionally successful but are not actualizing their potential: they feel that something is still missing in their lives. They find that as they work through their personal obstacles, their lives begin to feel richer and more satisfying and their relationships more intimate.
Dr. Mirman, a former Professor at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, has also taught at Michigan State U. and Loyola U. and was Director of Training at Forest Hospital. He has written 50 professional papers, is the Co-President of the International Forum for Psychoanalytic Education and a past member of the Divorce Magazine Advisory Board.
