Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed or wondering why relationships tend to feel so difficult? Do you find that you beat yourself up with self-criticism? Life can be challenging, and we may feel that we have to just keep going and suck it up, which may lead us to feel lonelier and more overwhelmed. In my experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor, and previous experience as a yoga instructor I have found that the combination of mindfulness, self-awareness, and processing trauma can be quite powerful in finding our authentic selves.

My sense of humor is big part part of my counseling style. I take my work with clients seriously, but there are times when therapy needs to include some humor. In addition to counseling, I also provide life coaching for clients who want to make changes but aren't sure where to start. I work particularly well with clients who are nervous or skeptical about the idea of counseling. I realize that therapy can be a significant expense, so I run my practice as efficiently as possible. All scheduling, forms, notes, and billing are online, so we can make the best use of our time together.

Coming home after another long day and the anger comes out toward your significant other. Driving to work and you’re already fuming because of all the incompetent drivers on the road. White knuckling it as you wrestle with the urges to use your substance of choice – even after saying for the 10th time that you’re going to quit. That feeling of anxiety or panic you get when you’re around that feared situation. It’s not just that, you worry constantly about all the “what ifs” and waiting for the other shoe to drop. You want to actually believe you can feel calmer, end your addiction, and that the good things in life can stay good.

Life is full of difficult moments made especially challenging when we are in them alone. My first priority as a counselor is to meet my clients where they are; to be with them in their hardship and pain. The feelings and situations that brought you to this page are not something to be belittled. They matter, just as you do, and I would be honored to walk beside you in this journey. You are worthy of care and support and I hope that I can be of help.

Counseling is a unique journey, involving a collaboration between therapist and client. Each individual is different and I believe in individualizing therapy, versus a "one size fits all" method. I believe in supporting clients by guiding them through self-discovery and challenging/processing their internal dialogues.

Helping people has always been a part of my life and my personality. In my practice I like to empower people to find their own voice and resilience. Evidenced based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing are my most effective tools in helping clients find their voice. Also, developing communication skills is one of the cornerstones for setting healthy boundaries and finding your peace. I have learned from my many amazing clients over the years that identifying what you can and can’t control is the defining skill that can bring calm to your mind and your life.

I work from a nonjudgmental model where all are welcome. I help people that are struggling find happiness. My job is to make my job obsolete. I offer the tools to help reach goals, to heal from trauma, deal with pain, beat depression and fix relationships. I don't sell the 50 minutes a week that most therapists give you, I'm selling a practice life. It's not just the time we spend in session, it's also about the time between sessions. I have found that working this way moves the process of therapy forward and catalyzes healing.

Elizabeth Trembley is a licensed clinical therapist. She believes effective psychotherapy fosters the path towards wholeness and connection and is committed to the healing process. Past hurts, societal and familial programming, the voice of the inner critic, emotional dysregulation, and traumatic experiences can fragment the self and break away our inner strengths and resources. She aims to relocate those strengths and inner resiliencies by facilitating connection, exploration, and implementing appropriate best-practice tools. Her aim is to navigate the psychological barriers that create disconnection and establish new patterns.

Humans are complex beings and from time to time we need help navigating distressing feelings, life transitions, and difficult relationships. We often get stuck in life and have trouble freeing ourselves from what holds us back. The things that hold us back can be in relationship with others, or our own emotions, thoughts, and responses. When we are stuck, we feel disconnected, dysregulated, and a little lost because the strategies we have used before are not working for us now. We want to feel connected and bonded to those that mean the most to us and feel like we are in control of our thoughts and emotions.

How can I find a therapist in Charleston?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
