Life throws a lot at us. Sometimes it’s a recurring problem and sometimes it’s a totally new and unexpected problem. I have experience working with survivors of sexual and domestic violence, eating disorders, sexuality and gender exploration, trauma, relational issues, life transition difficulties, anxiety, depression, and other concerns. I also enjoy working with clients who share multiracial, Hispanic, or Asian backgrounds. Whatever the concern is, it’s my privilege to walk alongside my client as they navigate a path forward.

My ideal client would be an individual who is seeking an improved quality of life or working towards an ideal self to live a more meaningful and content life. This can shape in many forms such as; recognizing, addressing, and paying respect to specific behaviors or thought patterns that complicate an individual's life and improving their ability to cope and work through their struggles.

Working in the mental health field since 2008, I have had the opportunity to work with a a great diversity of populations in a wide variety of settings. Each clinical encounter has helped shape my present practice. Over time, I have learned much about humans, our fundamental need for connection and understanding, and our great potential for healing and growth. I have cultivated a practice based on forming and maintaining therapeutic relationships that hold space and allow for important personal work to be done. Recently much of my work has been with adults in transitional states, including new parents and college students.

My grandparents were influential in my decision to work with older adults. I witnessed the support they received and wondered about the lack of support for others. For over nine years, I have worked with patients with chronic illnesses. The stress experienced by patients, family, and caregivers when managing health and/or mental health issues can be overwhelming. I aim to provide the listening ear that is needed.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with 25 years in the counseling profession. I completed both my undergraduate and graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and have lived in and around Richmond for most of my life. What seems like just yesterday I embarked on a brand new career. Somehow just yesterday became decades filled with exciting clinical and administrative experiences. From foster care to outpatient administration and franchise ownership the years have offered incredibly rich opportunities to gain an understanding of what clients want and expect from outpatient therapy.

NOT ACCEPTING CLIENTS AT THIS TIME. Sometimes it seems like things are never going to get better. Life feels unbearable. You didn’t plan for this. It’s unfair. You have suffered for a long time. You deserve support from a therapist who is validating, competent, tolerant, reliable, and authentic, who values your honest feedback in sessions, and is unafraid to speak up and say what needs to be said. You are doing the best you can AND have it in you to try harder and do better with the right support.

You’ve been told to “get over it,” that you “shouldn’t feel that way,” and that you’re “so negative.” So you tried to ignore your pain and it got stronger. You reprimanded yourself when difficult emotions surfaced. You found yourself feigning happiness to please those you spend time with. You’ve bottled up the past, feel unsteady in the present, and fear the future. Your ability to balance family commitments, work responsibilities, and social obligations is put to the test each day. You’re losing sight of who you are and where you’re going, but you haven’t lost your hope.

The Zen proverb 'Let go, or be dragged' reminds us that often in order to move forward, we must let go of what is holding us back. Whether it's anxiety, gender dysphoria, trauma, chronic suicidal ideation, or low self-esteem, I specialize in helping individuals uncover their innate ability to heal and empower themselves through mindfulness and meditation.

Change is inevitable, but that doesn't mean there aren't ways to help cope with it! While working with clients in therapy my goal is to help my clients develop a “toolbox” to navigate life’s difficult situations. While working with clients, I strive to make them feel comfortable expressing their authentic thoughts and feelings in a judgment-free atmosphere.

I have spent my entire career working to help make the lives of others better. From working with the victims of Hurricane Katrina to working and serving the homeless in Washington, DC. The majority of my life has been spent in the service of others. I graduated from Liberty University with a master’s in Professional Counseling and a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling: Addiction and Treatment. I have learned to help effectively and efficiently those suffering from mental illness. I believe in treating the whole person, and sometimes that includes working with their families.

Are you and your partner are having the same fight that you can’t seem to get past? Are you a single parent, juggling co-parenting and conflict with an ex? Has your partner been unfaithful, and you want to forgive but don’t know how? Is it hard to say no in moments when you are overwhelmed at work? It's common for people to struggle with their family communication and figure out how to have boundaries honored. What about conflict with your adult child, or that old friend whose friendship you cherish but seem to be losing? I can help with those things and in fact, those are the kinds of life issues people come to therapy for.

How can I find a therapist in Williamsburg?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
