Family Therapy in Shreveport, LA
I also come from a proud military family and am a passionate Veteran advocate.
My love for helping others overcome life challenges stems from my early days in college when I was a member of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. This organization introduced me to community based service projects that were life changing. It was in these early days that I had the rewarding opportunity to change lives and help others see bright possibilities for their future. Through counseling I am able to continue to help others by empowering individuals and families from a strengths based perspective.

“Each day yields another opportunity to strive to become a better version of yourself. I’m passionate about counseling because I too have learned that when life becomes uncertain and difficult to navigate, counseling is the tool that gives voice where you are silent, it embraces you in areas you feel broken, it pours into your empty places to fill you with hope, clarification, and renewed expectation that you will overcome your challenges and accomplish your goals. You will win!” Latoya has vast experience working with children, adolescents and adults by way of individual, group, couples, and family therapy.

My questions to you are: Will you challenge yourself? Do you need a perspective outside of your biased family and friends? Just think of me as the pages in your diary.
Are you exhausted, sad, lonely, anxious, or overwhelmed? Is it hard to get out of bed? Sick of it all? Life is tough and it can be difficult to get through the hard days. No one has a cookie-cutter existence. The bad choices we made and continue to make have been guided by our thought processes when we were wounded. Wounds can be healed. If you are ready & willing to work through negative thought processes that keep you bound, heal, and gain new perspectives, then trauma-focused therapy, EMDR, and an unbiased support partner may help you recover for good. Life is tough, but so are you. Let's help you become who you are meant to be!

Our lives are shaped by the different events we experience. Those events have great influence on our decision making process. Some of those influences may negatively impact relationships. This is true with couples, friends, family and even ourselves. We experience issues with conflict, grief, trauma, etc. and try to deal with them the best way we know how. It is a misconception that people are weak or have no faith when seeking professional help. I believe that seeking help from a therapist is a sign of strength. It is one of the bravest things a person can do.

In couples or family therapy, I will strive to make conversations comfortable for you to share, be heard, and be more like a team.
Are you looking to improve your daily life or relationship? Try not to think of therapy as a bad thing! Think of it as devoted time to focus on yourself, get guided support (that's professional & outside of loved ones' opinions), and talk things out to be in a better headspace. I help individuals find solutions to feel less stuck and move forward. I also help couples and families understand each other more to meet genuine needs. You will hopefully learn communication, emotional regulation, and problem solving skills to help replace negative habits with healthier ones. My approach is a mixture of care, real talk, and a little humor.

Any individual, family, or couple willing to work on reaching to a better end are always welcome.
We are a team in this. I believe in teamwork during therapy. If the client appears to be doing most of the work, then that is extreme progress. If I as the therapist is doing most of the work, then we may need to rethink and regroup on the treatment to best fit the client. It is the client's responsibility to communicate with therapist on any issues or any adjustments that needs to be made. I want to walk alongside those who are seeking reach a better end and better livelihoods.

After being married for over 40 years undergoing intense educational training in the areas of family and marriage, I believe the information that I have gained in the marriage and family field has adequately prepared me to assist others in learning how to systemically work through some of the daily issues presented by today’s society.
The poet William Ernest Henley (1849-1903) penned the words : "I am the master of my fate: the captain of my soul." The message that Henley was so eloquently trying to convey is, that while we may face challenges in our lives, we should not let them defeat us! The fact is, life comes with rewards and defeats. Just as we have actions within us that respond to rewards, we also have actions within us to face defeats and the ability to learn how to rebuild, restore, and renew ourselves. One of the ways of renewing, sustaining, and rebuilding ourselves is through therapy.

Initial sessions involve gathering information and listening to what brought the individual, family, or couple to therapy.
I came to the counseling world after 30+ years in private practice as a pediatrician. Having worked with many families, I developed a keen insight into parent child relationships, navigating the tween years, and launching young adults into the real world. I support individuals, families, and couples to assist with improving communication, as well as strengthening and healing bonds. Sometimes, when these bonds cannot be healed, it is a matter of accepting the fact that we cannot change others. Instead, I help clients focus on their own thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
