Similarly, Sonja providing child counseling using play therapy, school issues, anxiety, bullying, ADHD/ ADD, and social issues.
The teen years offer significant challenges for children and parents alike. Children are faced with increasing social and academic demands while facing tough choices and greater responsibilities. Raging hormones and strained relationships do not make it any easier! Parents often feel frustrated and exhausted trying to help their child reach his or her full potential. Many times, the parent/child relationship becomes marked by fighting and power struggles. Parents and teens facing difficulty may find teen counseling effective and helpful. Finding a teen therapist specifically trained and experienced working with adolescents frequently provides the greatest benefit.

I specialize in the assessment and treatment of learning difficulties, including those caused by AD/HD. My approach to academic difficulties goes beyond the limited information contained in a diagnosis. I identify the specific causes of learning problems that can be targeted with academic therapy or accommodations in the classroom. I provide detailed interventions and recommendations that target specific cognitive processes (e.g., working memory, processing speed, planning, organization, etc.), higher level language and comprehension skills, and basic academic skills required for efficient learning. I use the latest research on individual differences to tailor interventions.

We often hear that “high school is the best time of your life” or “You’ll LOVE college!”, but what happens when it isn’t? What should you do when it feels more difficult than fun? Life changes rapidly in our teens and 20s, and it can feel hard to keep up. School, work, extracurriculars, friends, and family can be difficult to balance. As you navigate this time of life and grow toward adulthood, would be honored to walk alongside you in your journey as you find more clarity and learn to cope.

Life can be full of difficult challenges and sometimes we realize that our old ways of dealing with life setbacks aren't working. Counseling can be helpful in getting back on track and finding new ways to navigate those problems. I welcome a variety of issues and individual diversity.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
