I have worked with families, individuals and couples for many years, and find that bridging miscommunications to build connection is something I am deeply passionate about. When we can work to understand one another, we can often come to better understand ourselves, especially within these systems. I utilize a combination of Internal Family Systems (IFS), narrative and attachment theories with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in all my work with clients. I come from a family systems perspective believing our interconnectedness influences others, and empowering individuals to use this concept as a model of change.

We all struggle throughout life and I was no exception. Acknowledging the struggle is a huge step towards success along with finding the right therapist. We only know what we were taught and how to react to situations from those who raised us. You deserve to be the best you possible and I am here to help you find that. Let me help you discover new ways to a happy and healthier life. I utilize an attachment framework derived from Emotionally Focused Therapy and Story Informed Trauma Therapy (SITT) to help my clients understand how they came to be who they are.

I have years of experience working with young adults, parents/families, and educators to navigate the unique challenges each of these experiences can bring. I support clients in navigating life transitions, identity development, values clarity, emotion regulation, and shame resilience. I also work with clients on attachment-related relationship dynamics and challenges that stem from early childhood or other attachment injuries. By connecting in a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space, clients are able to explore their internal worlds and gain clarity as well as a renewed sense of empowerment in their lives.

Interventions such as CBT, DBT, EFT, MTI, Mindfulness and Solution-Focused therapy.
These last few years have presented many challenges for everyone. Depression, anxiety, addiction, grief and other issues are on a rise. It is not always easy to make the decision to reach out for therapy. However, therapy can help and support a person through what they are experiencing. Change is not easy; it takes courage to change and you do not have to face it alone. I have worked in acute care for many years with adults, elderly, children and adolescents. I feel confident to work with many mental health issues.

I received my Masters in Social Work from the University of Chicago and have completed Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Level II, a body-oriented therapy for safely exploring trauma symptoms, as well as Emotionally Focused Therapy ("EFT") for couples.
- www.christinajamesllc.com - My goal is to make clients feel supported, heard, and understood as they take the commendable step to start therapy. I believe each person holds instinctive wisdom about what they want and need for a healthy life, and that therapy is a wonderful way to bring this to the surface. As a therapist who holds white, hetero, and cis gender privilege, I am committed to ongoing self-reflection and accountability about how this privilege may show up in our therapy, in order to make this a safe environment.

With couples, I employ Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) to help each partner learn to recognize and express their emotional needs more effectively.
I work with individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, and the effects of trauma in their lives, as well as couples and families who want to increase connection. I particularly enjoy helping parents work through challenges that prevent them from being the parents they want to be. I believe that good therapy is much more than a paid friendship, having a space to simply vent, or playing whack-a-mole with problems. We all come into this world with God-given needs for safety, connection, and belonging. Many of our problems stem from trying to get those needs met, but not always knowing how to do so in healthy, effective ways.

With this understanding, and your unique situation I may also integrate aspects or offer tools from EFT, SFBT, CBT, Experiential, and Play Therapy.
I specialize in couples and families navigating life transitions, pre-marital or pre-commitment preparation, parenting challenges, high conflict, intimacy and sexual dissatisfaction, and managing relationships with ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Throughout our lives we learn behaviors and patterns that offer a sense of safety, but later become ineffective and difficult to change. This often isn't realized until it impacts our relationships and feels like our world is unraveling. Together we can calm the chaos of the present to feel safe enough to change the patterns from the past impacting your life today.

I utilize several modalities, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution Focused Therapy.
Say yes to yourself this time. It is hard to envision carrying it all. You've learned to appear like you have it all figured out, but internally, you feel disconnected & empty. You wonder how you can return to normal, when you don't quite know what normal is anymore. Your energy level is depleted. You feel like you are surviving on autopilot, but not truly living. Perhaps you are in a relationship that no longer feels sustainable. You don't have to navigate this alone. Thriving is possible. You've come to the right place and I'm here to help. To learn more, I welcome you to visit my website: www.RenewedHopePsychotherapy.com

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
