Let's rewrite the narrative! I believe in taking a dynamic approach to change, and can offer realistic tools that you can start putting to use in just a few sessions.
If you are ready to make a change and start leading a more fulfilling life, counseling can provide the framework for a radical shift. Together, let's take a holistic look at your life to identify where you may be holding onto limiting or unhelpful beliefs and behavior patterns and instead find ways to disrupt the old ways of reacting to the world. Let's reaffirm your core values and explore new ways to respond to life's challenges that are more aligned with your authentic self.

Have you found yourself feeling stuck? Are you curious about building a deeper sense of self awareness, perhaps an ability to connect more thoughtfully in your relationships? Life can get busy and it's easy for self care and the care of our relationships to fall by the wayside. Our work together may look like processing past trauma, exploring dysfunctional patterns or navigating life transitions. Clients I work with can benefit not only from gaining understanding as to why they get stuck in unproductive patterns but also by identifying tangible ways they can practice healthier alternatives moving forward.

I offer short-term, solution-focused therapy. My clients are successful people whom I respect and admire. Like in other areas of their lives when an issue occurs, they want answers and a course of action. Providing for others, they have often put aside their own needs. Their work and personal relationships are intertwined. Talking about how to move forward can be a timeout when one can determine the next steps. Hearing yourself talk aloud about what has been on your mind and heart may give clarity in differentiating between want and need. I encourage clients to gift themselves with time aside.

I help clients get unstuck, overcome challenges, navigate difficult life transitions, achieve victory over addictive behaviors, and eliminate beliefs that distort their identity. You can gain control over emotional reactions. You can experience freedom from trauma responses. You can improve your relationships. You can learn to implement strategies and achieve goals. I became a counselor because of the freedom I received, and I want to help you experience the same freedom. This can be real for you, and I'd love to show you how you can get unstuck without more exhaustion or toxic wishful thinking. You can do this, and I can help you.

Much of what I have learned about people, I learned from my dad who was a pastor for 55 years. I too have been in ministry for 30+ years. I see people every day people starving for fulfillment that is lasting and not just "feel good" emotions. Many people have had no foundation in life. They have been kicked from one place to another all of their lives. This causes deep wounds that need to be healed. I seek to "help" bring that healing. I consider my calling as a counselor one of great privilege, honor, and second only to my own family.

I have worked in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings with adolescents, adults, and elders in individual, family, couples, and group treatment dealing with a wide range of therapeutic issues. However, I believe my most important qualification is a compassionate heart for helping people heal brokenness in their lives, make lasting changes, and live freely. My approach to counseling recognizes a person's spirituality as the central organizing principal around which lasting mental health and strong relationships may be achieved. Please don't hesitate to call today to make an appointment.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
