Having worked with individuals age 5 and up in schools and private practice, I use an existential-humanistic approach to address a host of presenting issues. I have helped clients with anxiety, depression, neurodiversity issues (including ADHD, gifted learners, and Autism Spectrum-related issues), emotional regulation, trauma, and navigating family and life transitions. I am LGBTQ+ and neurodiversity affirming. I strive to provide an environment of safety and trust for clients to explore presenting issues. I also believe in collaborating with clients to build therapeutic goals and to achieve them by cultivating individual strengths.

I have worked with hundreds of clients of all ages over the past thirty years, suffering with depression, anxiety, grief, PTSD, eating disorders (obesity and the use of bariatric surgery), relationship issues, and major life disappointments. Choosing an ideal therapist is knowing that person is passionate about your well being and will exhaust every avenue to that end. Together we understand you deeply and to validate your best and minimize unnecessary judgments, resulting in an expanded and more satisfying life.

Thank you for taking the time to review my profile! Since 2006, I have been helping adults address a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-esteem, and trauma. The relationship you have with a counselor is one of the most unique relationships you will ever have. I believe this is a collaborative relationship where we work together to help you make the changes you want to make in your life. I also believe in bringing creativity and the arts into sessions to help you look at your struggles and obstacles in a different way. I am a member of the New Orleans Jung Seminar.

Welcome to your therapeutic journey. Therapy is the process of undoing patterns and behaviors that no longer serve you in the present. Then replacing those maladaptive behaviors with healthy coping mechanisms. Therapy is a process of looking inwards. To gain insight, understanding, and self-compassion. It can truly be a beautiful process to be apart of.

Is your life upside down or simply unsatisfactory? Are you having relationship problems? Or maybe you need to get a handle on your excessive substance abuse or drinking? While you can often feel better after a good talk with a family member or friend, for moderate or severe emotional distress, relief tends to be temporary. Talking with a trained therapist can help alleviate emotional distress much more efficiently and effectively. Having had over forty years of experience I am able to listen and interact in a way that helps you quickly get to the root of your emotional distress and concerns.

Everyone's experience on our Earth is unique! This may sound exciting for some and isolating for others. I believe in order to understand each client on a deeper level, it is important to gain understanding of the individual and also of the various systems that the individual functions in.

Have you found yourself feeling stuck? Are you curious about building a deeper sense of self awareness, perhaps an ability to connect more thoughtfully in your relationships? Life can get busy and it's easy for self care and the care of our relationships to fall by the wayside. Our work together may look like processing past trauma, exploring dysfunctional patterns or navigating life transitions. Clients I work with can benefit not only from gaining understanding as to why they get stuck in unproductive patterns but also by identifying tangible ways they can practice healthier alternatives moving forward.

The innovations of our modern world bring new forms of stress while intensifying those which already exist. Hours of the day are spent in grueling stop and go traffic, and to advance one's education or career often requires uprooting from what is known and setting up in a completely new place. People are working more hours than ever before, while cost of living, overpopulation, and globalization heighten the stress of just trying to get by. With change comes the pain of adapting to the way the world is now, often so different from just a few short years ago.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
