As Maya Angelou once so eloquently wrote: My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style. Life is not only about surviving, it is about thriving. The ups and downs of daily life can sometimes take a toll on the strongest of minds and deepest of hearts. Together we can rebuild the connections needed to thrive in this world one step at a time, one day at a time.

Finding the right therapist is extremely important. The strength of client-therapist bond privides the positive and accepting atmosphere in which issues of mind/spirit/body may be addressed. I take a conversational-collaborative and eclectic approach as I work with clients with various issues. My clients set goals and leave therapy with the skills they need. Sessions usually occur weekly in an effort to maintain a constructive intensity toward self-awareness and restoration.

My goal is to help adults understand themselves better and find more effective ways to cope with stressors. I approach therapy from an attachment-based and interpersonal lens, and I often focus on how past relationships impact present emotions and experiences. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of therapy, and I strive to create a sense of safety that also fosters growth.

The process of learning and accepting who we truly are and then living an authentic life as ourselves can be surprisingly challenging, requiring tenacity and resilience.
My work with clients has included addressing depression, anxiety, self-esteem and identity concerns as well as the social/emotional challenges that accompany ADHD, Autism and other disabilities. As a self avowed ‘nerd therapist’ with ADHD myself, I am passionate about working with fellow nerds, outcasts, artists or creatives who may feel out of sync with a mainstream approach. I am particularly adept at assisting clients in identifying their strengths and talents and applying them toward career, educational and other life goals. I am sex positive and endeavor to be an ally to LGBTQ+, poly and kink communities.

My expertise is in providing psychological testing services for children & adults ages 6+ to assist with diagnostic clarification for conditions such as ADHD or learning disorders.

Psychological testing is commonly recommended to diagnose ADHD or learning disabilities. College students are often referred for this type of testing because they are struggling in school for the first time and there are no known reasons for their challenges. We are here and now; but is your past a healthy part of it? The past can be a time of learning and moving forward, or it can be a red light in our lives and freeze us in that moment of time. It can paralyze us. Or, it can have us living in a world of caution lights where we fearfully drift through them, unaware of the present or future, or vigilantly white knuckling our way, just existing and just “getting through” each day. How we come to terms with the past, forgiving our mistakes and others’ faults can catapult us into a more peaceful and fulfilling life.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?
When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.
When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?
It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.
What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?
Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.
Are there medications for learning disabilities?
Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
