Hi there! I’m SaMika. Many people see therapy as a one-sided conversation in which the “expert” talks to you and tells you what to do. What is the joy in that? I find joy in working with other experts to create solutions to great change- and guess what? You are the expert on YOU. I believe one of the bravest things someone can do is work to understand their own story.

I specialize in problems related to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and self-harming behavior.
I am passionate about helping individuals manage their mental health so that they can experience peace in their lives and relationships. I received my doctorate in family science and a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of Kentucky. I have a strong background in improving mental health and well-being in the context of relationships, especially when there is risk of self-harm. Many people define themselves and their family members in a limited way, often forgetting the vast potential that each person embodies.

You made it here so you are one step closer to getting the help you deserve. Congratulations! I am a LCSW based out of Southern, Kentucky but originally from Middle Tennessee. I made my way to the beloved Commonwealth of Kentucky to complete my undergraduate degree, Applied Human Sciences with a focus on family and child studies, at Western Kentucky University (WKU). Go Tops! I liked WKU enough that I stuck around for another two years where I completed my Masters in Social Work.

Life is a series of transitions - some peaks and some valleys. I find these valleys often are a result of internal conflict and external events or pressure. I believe that we all have an authentic self and much of the internal conflict comes from living inauthentically, which develops into maladaptive behaviors. There’s “the way it seems” and “the way it is,” and sometimes we all need someone to remind us of “the way it is.” That’s where I come in - my goals are to work TOGETHER with you to navigate a new path toward living your most authentic life and finding inner peace and confidence to be that person.

In my practice, I focus on nurturing emotional development and healing for clients aged birth to 30, helping them overcome challenges like anxiety, depression, and trauma. I believe authentic healing requires understanding root causes, so I establish a safe, supportive environment for clients to genuinely explore their emotions and needs. My approach prioritizes uncovering underlying issues over symptom management and building trust to empower clients to express themselves openly and without judgment.

Beginning therapy can be an overwhelming and courageous step, which can lead to powerful change for those doing the work. I believe we are at our bravest when we feel it the least. The therapy process can help individuals gain additional perspectIve, identify unknown parts, reinterpret fears and weaknesses, recognize and nurture strengths.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
