I’ve built a career out of understanding and helping people who are queer, transgender/gender non-conforming, ethically non-monogamous, kinky, and otherwise living truths that are somehow outside the norm.
You know you want therapy, but you’re nervous about choosing a therapist. What if you end up with someone you have to educate about your sexual orientation or relationship structure? Or someone who doesn’t understand your gender identity or respect your pronouns? What if your therapist is dismissive of how oppression has impacted your mental health, or can’t handle the trauma you’ve been through? If you've had these worries as you look for a therapist, I might be the one for you. The people whose lives don’t fit neatly into society’s boxes aren’t just my “clinical interest” – they’re my community.

My ideal client is anyone who feels ready to work. If you are transgender and ready to start accepting yourself or maybe you are ready to transition and need some guidance, I am a good counselor for you. If you are someone who has been struggling with panic attacks, or maybe feels like your emotional response to things is out of proportion for what 'the thing' is, I am a good counselor for you. If you are someone who is really hard on yourself or maybe you are going through something and simply need someone to talk to, I am a good counselor for you. I would love to hear from you.

I have over eight years of experience helping clients with anxiety, depression, boundary and relationship issues, and gender dysphoria.
My clients are often motivated to begin therapy as an investment in self. Whether you are needing support to find your truest self, curious about how your unprocessed past may be affecting your present, living with anxiety or depression, or are looking for skills to develop healthier relationships, we will work together to determine your therapeutic path. You can expect to identify narratives that have shaped your reactions and worldview, deconstruct what no longer fits your values, and equip you with tools to thrive beyond survival.

I enjoy working with clients who have symptoms of depression, anxiety, burnout, and/or trauma. We will work collaboratively to set and work toward treatment goals. I love seeing clients thrive when they learn and implement healthy coping skills, self-care, and an improved relationship with themselves. There's a reason for behaviors and habits; in therapy, we will explore the root of these coping tactics that may have helped at one time but may not be working for you anymore. At this time, I accept Medicaid-insured and self-pay clients.

Starting therapy can be a daunting task, between the fear of being judged and the dread of spending half your session explaining terms or acronyms that make up an integral part of your identity. All you want is to talk to someone who gets you. Maybe you’re navigating the process of coming out; maybe you’re on the cusp of a major transition; or maybe you’re tired of trying to fit yourself in a box that doesn’t seem made for people like you. It can feel lonely, frustrating, and even scary sometimes. I understand.

I work primarily with adolescents and adults. I believe people, at different points in their lives, may need support overcoming hurdles or may just be feeling "stuck." I enjoy working with clients who have concerns in many areas, including depression, relationships, identity, adjustment, anxiety and worry, stress and life management, or family concerns. I value my work as a psychologist and approach each client with respect for their own unique identity and the concerns they seek therapy for.

There are times when a person simply needs a sanctuary in which one can focus on what is working and not working in life. Therapy is an ideal place for this type of reflection. Therapy is also an active process that requires considerable patience, empathy, and a willingness to explore those parts of ourselves that require some attention and perhaps even need to change. I believe that you hold within yourself the capacity for change, and I am very willing to journey with you as a guide toward a more healthy and peaceful way of being.

I have been working as a therapist since 2008 and enjoy helping people understand the role of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in creating a life worth living for themselves. Relationships are important for coping with day to day stressors. One that often gets neglected is the personal relationship an individual has with his or herself. I enjoy helping people identify their strengths and define themselves by these qualities.

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
