I would love to walk alongside clients in early stage substance use recovery as well as long term recovery.
Addiction is just a way of trying to get at something else. Something bigger. Call it transcendence if you want, but it’s a rat in a maze." Addiction, in its many forms, has been one of my passions since entering this field. I would love to work with anyone struggling to control behaviors that have gotten out of their control. There is power and healing when a client shares their deepest and darkest thoughts in hopes of inviting change and escaping shame. Shame and judgement keep us all locked away in our minds. I want to step into the struggle alongside you, and seek to help you find a way to a life full of freedom and recovery.

I specialize in substance use counseling; but often addiction is only the outward symptom.
The most common form of suffering I see in people is when they no longer trust themselves. If you are struggling with habits that are harmful; whether it be drug or alcohol addiction, eating or spending money in harmful ways, there is hope that you can trust yourself again. Suffering comes in many forms, but for all in pain there is a way to heal and to feel safe again. My job is to help you find that.

I specialize in providing research-based treatment to adults with a range of struggles, including trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), substance use disorders, and anxiety disorders. In order to help individuals reach their treatment goals, I use evidence-based interventions and measure progress using short assessments. Furthermore, I recognize the importance of providing genuine warmth and caring to all clients to promote their own self-compassion, acceptance, and growth. “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change” – Carl Rogers.

“roots” Mental Health Services specializes in “getting to the ‘root’ cause of trauma, depression, anxiety, relational impairment, life transitions, substance use and abuse, etc.
Therapy is not MAGIC. It is a complicated process that requires commitment and active participation to be effective. Therapy can be uncomfortable and “emotionally draining” when HARD discussions provoke painful memories. However, when an individual does “the work” of therapy by identifying and disrupting destructive thinking patterns, which leads to changes in behavior, real MAGIC happens. This power to become a better version of oneself is the “magic” possessed by us all; the therapist is simply one who assists in “tapping” into that power.

I have specialized training for substance use disorders.
When I meet a new client, I like to acknowledge that therapy is a courageous choice. Our first meeting is a time for me to learn why you reached out and what kind of change you are seeking. It is also a time for you to learn how you feel about me! If you return, then ongoing therapy sessions will consist of evidence-based practices that are specific to your goals and needs. We will measure and record your progress, so that you can make informed decisions about what works for you. Some people remain in therapy indefinitely because they like the ongoing support, while others exit after succeeding toward a specific, time-limited goal.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
