One of the bravest things we can do is ask for help. Scrolling through profile after profile and trying to find the right therapist can be especially challenging. If you've found this page on your healing journey, know you are worthy of well-being. It can be overwhelming when you don't feel that's true, but that's where therapy can help.

I believe in focusing not just on the individual client but the whole family in treatment, offering not only one on one child counseling, individual adolescent and adult counseling, but parenting and family sessions. At times individual sessions are the best approach due to the unique needs of the client, these being offered for children, adolescents and adults. With over 17 years of experience in counseling, I continue to greatly enjoy helping each individual take a step towards healing and the wholeness for which they were designed.

You are looking online for something to help the sadness and heaviness in your chest go away once and for all. You feel like a tightly wound ball of yarn and everything in your life feels like it is plucking at you and making you unravel. Balancing all of your roles in your life is nothing short of a miracle and the fear of failing at something wakes you up at night. No one may even suspect you are struggling but you cry when you are alone and feel like everything you are doing doesn't even matter anyway. There is a better way to manage life on life's terms.

Relationships form the foundation for all that we are. At their best, they give us a context to know our worth and value, to get our needs met, and to communicate. They give us a fulfilling path to be ourselves in this world. Unfortunately, when unhealthy/toxic relationships impact our upbringing, friendships, and romantic lives, we develop poor strategies for getting our needs met and may come to believe who we are is not good enough. If you struggle to find meaning and fulfillment in life, especially in your relationships, please know there is hope.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
