Maybe you remember this scene from a movie; picture it, a peaceful airplane ride becomes turbulent. The plane begins losing altitude rapidly. The flight attendant urgently instructs you to "put your oxygen mask on first" before helping others. That simple, but critical statement, is just as important in our everyday lives. Remembering to take time to yourself, non selfishly, can be difficult for anyone who tends to place others' needs first. Together, we'll explore your thoughts, feelings, decisions, choices, wants, and needs. I will assist you in" finding your voice" and help you to "put your oxygen mask on first

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is a model I was trained in to help couples Hold onto each other through life's many ups and downs.
Love and Connection in life should not be confusing. But there is always a risk when it comes to getting those two critical hu man relational needs. Many times relationships feel like a dance, and feeling lost with no road map? It can often turn into division or discomfort, but does it always have to be that way? Emotionally Focused Therapy is a proven, evidence-based method that enhances couples' ability to gain Love and Connection through safety and security. And I would love to be that resource, coach, advocate to help teams sustain longevity in their relationship without leading to isolation or further hurt.

Navigating life isn’t easy. Add being bombarded by anxiety, the effects of trauma, a crazy life transition, addiction, or those awful depressive symptoms. Now it feels impossible, right? That’s how I felt at least. Thankfully, I was wrong! As a teenager and adult, therapy has led me down a beautiful path of healing and happiness. It's my belief that you deserve the same. You deserve an abundant life of joy, stability, and adventure, and I’d love nothing more than to help you get there.

I am passionate about helping individuals and couples build the relationships and lives they desire. We each enter our relationships with hurts and blind spots that keep us from connecting as we would like. Trauma is often the source of our hurt, even if it is many minor traumas. When these traumas are not dealt with, they can lead us to experience anxiety and depression. We must learn the tools to help us heal these root issues. Once we learn the tools, we must practice using them in a safe environment and apply them to other relationships.

Drawing on my previous experience as a youth pastor, I enjoy working with children, teenagers, and young adults. As a play therapist, I have worked extensively with children who are struggling with ADHD and trauma. I also enjoy working with couples and families, and individuals who struggle with addiction, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues and PTSD. The challenge of parenting sparks my interest and I enjoy using humor, emotion coaching, and intergenerational systemic family theories to illuminate and strengthen the resources that parents already have to offer. I believe that solutions can be found by viewing obstacles as opportunities for repair.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
