Being a parent, child, partner, employee- these are roles in which we might struggle, and could use support.
You possess within yourself what you need to heal. I believe this! I embrace a person-centered approach to therapy, where each person I see understands they are valuable, and in a judgment-free place to learn to help themselves. I have worked primarily with teen girls/ adult women and children in general. Over the last few years I have also been a college professor, and am well versed in issues faced by those in multiple roles across the higher education setting.

Thompson's areas of interest and experience include the following: Trauma, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Issues of identity and self-respect, Relationship conflict, Behavioral and emotional issues in children, Parenting, Life transitions, and Issues of faith.
"Everyone faces struggles at some point in life, and it is courage which allows us to seek help during those times. Common issues such as depression, anxiety, relational conflict, behavioral and emotional problems, and difficulty adjusting to life transitions can all be very oppressive, yet we can often work toward more helpful ways to manage these challenges. Asking for help can be hard, and it is usually the hard things that are worth doing."

A trusting relationship between a client and therapist offers a safe space to reflect on our experiences, our histories that we carry with us, and the way in which these histories impact our present experiences.
I strive to create a safe environment where clients are able to experience deep healing that comes from being seen, heard, and understood in a new and impactful way. It is my honor to walk alongside clients offering them hope while holding space for them to explore the impact of their families’ relational patterns, their ability to adjust to life cycle changes, marital conflict, trauma, depression, grief, PTSD, and anxiety has had on their lives. I understand that every client's personal journey is unique; therefore, my approach is tailored to fit the specific needs of each client.

I enjoy working with individuals and couples.
Building a trusting relationship between client and therapist is a key component in the therapeutic process. I am here to create a safe space for clients to process their needs and discover tools and interventions that will improve their overall quality of life. I enjoy working with children who are displaying behavioral and social/emotional concerns while incorporating the family. I also have experience with multiple individuals that are displaying anxiety, relationship stressors, and/or difficulties with life transitions. Couples therapy is also an area of interest and I do work with this population as well.

Drawing on my previous experience as a youth pastor, I enjoy working with children, teenagers, and young adults. As a play therapist, I have worked extensively with children who are struggling with ADHD and trauma. I also enjoy working with couples and families, and individuals who struggle with addiction, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues and PTSD. The challenge of parenting sparks my interest and I enjoy using humor, emotion coaching, and intergenerational systemic family theories to illuminate and strengthen the resources that parents already have to offer. I believe that solutions can be found by viewing obstacles as opportunities for repair.

I'm available after hours and weekends. Life is full of obstacles (divorce, parenting, failed relationships, etc.), and sometimes we need a trusted guide to navigate. I understand. We'll build a space for open dialogue, compassionate support, and practical tools. Whether you're a college student facing pressures, a parent seeking balance, a struggling athlete, a spouse hoping to keep your marriage together, or dealing with anxiety and depression, I'm here to serve you. Are you from a rural or "distant" location? I serve Kansans remotely statewide and I'm available during "non-traditional" hours (evenings, weekends, early morning).

Keeping passion and connection in relationships while also thriving as individuals is a goal that many of us have. Balancing these aspects of life can be difficult, especially when life stressors, mental or emotional disorders, or trauma present themselves. My goal is to help clients achieve their goals of connection and personal growth, while challenging them to act on the best parts of themselves. I am passionate about working with couples struggling with intimacy and desire issues. My approach in working with couples centers on differentiation based therapies and encourages both individual and couple growth.

I am currently accepting new clients and have short wait times. I am an autistic, gender-affirming, trauma-informed therapist in Topeka. I am self-diagnosed, and I get the struggle. For the last several years, I have worked with a variety of people with differing strengths, lifestyles and goals. My approach is client-centered, meaning that the most important thing for me is to first establish a relationship with a client by meeting them where they are, and offering a space that is non-judgmental, caring and empathetic space. Oh, and bonus... I have a really cute dog that comes to work with me. I look forward to speaking with you.

Life and relationships present many experiences that impact us and our lives. I believe that through the process of facing painful issues, learning to soothe our anxieties, working on our destructive behaviors, and connecting with our own personal power and strengths, we can begin to develop a healthier relationship with ourselves and others. When we do this, we are more able and willing to navigate the pains and pleasures that naturally come with life, adult responsibilities and relationships. Allowing ourselves to go through this process often leads to a more fulfilling relationship with ourselves, our loved ones and with life.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
