I treat bipolar disorder, panic, abuse, hoarding, and obsessive compulsive disorder.
Appointments for teens and adults are via telemedicine. Children, age 4-11, are in person. Are you depressed? Feel unable to get out of bed, paralyzed by fear or overwhelming heaviness? Do you wonder what happened to that happy couple you used to be? Do you have anxious thoughts keeping you awake, or draining your energy? You don't have to solve your problems by yourself. Get help in a safe environment where you can explore your feelings and devise a strategy to turn things around. Change happens when you actually do things differently.

I work with women who feel anxious and/or distant from their loved ones. Sometimes anxiety can be tangled in with the distance we feel with family and sometimes the relationships with our family create a place for anxiety. Therapy is a place where you can untangle these relationships and the voices in your head telling you worst case scenarios. Whether your anxiety feels connected to your relationships or completely separate, it is worth it to give yourself the opportunity to understand why you feel the way you feel in a curious and nonjudgmental way. Email me today for a free consultation on what therapy can do for you.

I have worked as a school counselor for the past several years and am now enjoying private practice as well. Counseling in a school setting has granted me the opportunity to work with my students and their family members. Exploring family systems and fostering an understanding between family members is one of my greatest passions. I also enjoy working with adults that are going through the many challenges and changes that life can throw at us. As the poet Mary Oliver so beautifully puts it "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? " —Mary Oliver

We're all faced with challenges, big and small. Sometimes these grow to overpower and overwhelm us. The adults, children, and families I work with say that I help them feel heard, valued, comfortable, and that I provide a safe place to explore options and pick the right solutions.

I am grateful to have been a part of helping so many individuals, couples, and blending families resolve their issues over the past 35 years. While the experience has honed my therapy skills, each new person or relationship is unique and requires exploring solutions that fit their individual personality.

Dr. Maxwell specializes in treating chronically turbulent emotions, as well as difficulties relating comfortably and effectively to others. Sometimes these experiences go along with a feeling of not knowing who one is, as well as making rash choices one often regrets. These experiences may or may not be related to abuse(s) and/or neglect experienced in one’s childhood and teenage years. Clinically, these experiences sometimes manifest as personality disorders and/or complex posttraumatic stress disorder. He also helps people curb unruly anxiety, combat avoidance, disrupt depressive thinking patterns, and reshape unhelpful habits.

For those experiencing anxiety, depression, and/or trauma, it’s easy to feel like where you are is not where you want to be. This can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you are unsure what steps to take forward. However, what we often forget is that taking these steps is something that we don’t have to do alone. Sometimes all we need is a helping hand to guide us through that first step. This is something that I understand and hope to provide for others as they start their mental health journey.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
