You stare out the window, asking yourself how did I get here. Wondering where that sense of control and safety that you once experienced went to and trying desperately to figure out how to get it back. You deal with with the feelings of disappointment and sadness in silence. This feeds the anxious thought that things are not going to get better and/or the depressive thought that you are not enough. Leaving you feeling helpless and vulnerable. So you stare out the window, because surely the answer is just over the horizon; holding onto hope but also feeling emotional and physical fatigue. Knowing that you want help without judgement.

An ideal client for applied behavioral analysis may have issues such as difficulty communicating, socializing, or managing their emotions. Their needs would include support in developing these skills, along with strategies to cope with any challenging behaviors. Their goals may involve improving their overall quality of life, increasing independence, and forming meaningful relationships. Ultimately, they likely want to feel understood, included, and empowered to navigate the world more effectively.

I have been in the field for 17 years and at this time my area of practice focuses on ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, gender and sexuality, death, dying and grief and obsessive-compulsive disorders which include body focused repetitive behaviors such as (nail biting, skin picking, hair pulling) and addiction.
Asking for help can be scary. You've already taken the first step. I aim to help you explore your own strengths and problem-solving strategies by serving as a compassionate, non-judgmental sounding board to help you explore things you would like to change. My goal is to eventually work myself out of a job so you can get on with your life. It is my belief that "we have to welcome, accommodate and support a wider range of 'normal', and only then will we benefit from the extraordinary difference these diverse minds can bring." -R.H.

We can overcome what holds us back. Overcoming OCD and other personal challenges led me into the counseling field, and my commitment is to help you develop and implement your own unique process of renovation, healing, and change. While reaching out for help may be difficult and create feelings of vulnerability, it is often the necessary first step on one of life's most important journeys--the journey of uncovering and maximizing your potential. Based on personal experience, I believe that the rewards are likely to exceed the feelings of risk.

I am a Kansas native and have been in the helping professions for over five years, and I am a Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist (LCP). Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
